This is something I would not like dealing with. So I will make sure to avoid anything that could transfer these critters to my knives. Probably doesn't matter if the bone is old or new.

If the handles are horn then it is well known that there are household beetles that can eat it. But they do not chew on bone.

I know that oils will “smother” bugs, so if that’s the problem seems it would work. Plus Ballistol neutralizes ph, kills fungus, and won’t harm the knife. As much as I love Ballistol I’m ashamed I didn’t think of this earlier!
