So Close Yet So Far

Today my wife and I, on the way home from a two week driving vacation down South, decided on the spur of the moment to swing into NY to go by the Wawarsing Historical Society and Knife Museum in Napanoch. It’s closed for the season but the current manager Jim Cintron is willing to open it for interested parties. I called Jim but the short notice timing didn’t work out. Jim is a very accommodating fellow so next time we’ll plan more appropriately. (Jim I apologize for the drool on the window glass!)

Dennis, how far is this from your home ? Maybe you can return and overnight at a motel nearby ? I bet there are neat old knives to be found in that area: flea markets, in old barns, under motel mattresses, like, everywhere. 100 years ago many of the area locals would of worked for one of 5 or so knife manufacturers. Hope you get back there.

Yep Roland we’ve already talked about making it back to the area for a long weekend getaway. It’s about 200 miles from Boston and there is a lot to see and do in the area.

We stopped at the museum a few years ago but it was a couple of days late. They had closed it after Labor Day,mand we were there the week after Labor Day. We were on our way back to Texas after a vacation trip to Maine. One of these days........

Unfortunately I found the Hudson Valley ironically devoid of pocket knives. We stopped at several antique shops and flea markets in the area and came up empty. I also found no one who knew anything about the area’s history of knife manufacturing. At one place near Poughkeepsie when I asked the proprietor about pocket knives, he said he used to get quite a few but the New York laws on knives are so confusing now that he no longer buys them to re-sell in his shop. Over all New York was a wasted effort - maybe I just didn’t hit the right places. But I did find some in Maine and Pennsylvania on that trip.
