The Case 3254 trapper came to me with no scales at all, but I suspect it may have had the yellow celluloid that was starting to go. (There are no dots hiding under the USA, so it is from the 1965-69 period.) I did have a shield in my parts collection that fit the liner holes, but as you can see, it was pretty beat up. (If you put a beat-up shield on a restored knife, you get a restored knife with a beat-up shield.) The scales are Culpepper's smooth "Sunset" bone.
The Robeson 66426 was missing one scale entirely, the clip had a broken tip and someone decided to bend up the liners just to make things more challenging (last 3 pics). But, this one only cost me 9 bucks, it did have the original shield and I am a total sucker for this pattern. I've seen it described as a cross between a dogleg jack and a gunstock. (Or, maybe a pregnant dogleg?) Anyway, I reprofiled the broken tip, straightened the liners and the new scales are smooth, undyed white bone (poor man's ivory?), that I left at full thickness, which I prefer.
So, the EDC herd has now grown by 2.
Sometimes the liners do that from abuse or the liner material was too thin and without the handle material there, they will bow in.
