Knife Picks

So last night I decided to go thru some of my knives and give them a fluff/buff. I hold the knife in my rt hand and open blades with my lf hand thumb.. I got a few (CASE) that are real hard opening.. Yep.. ripped the thumb nail.. So I switched hands and then did the same to my lf thumb.. So it looks like my nails are getting real brittle
So I am wondering if anyone uses a knife pick.. Give me your ideas.. Read an interesting article in the Backwoodsman mag (Crutches for opening slip joint knives) and some of the suggestions on what to use are.. Guitar pic, Sears (Craftsman 4-Way Screwdriver), Multi-Tool.. And the obvious.. A bonafide knife pic.. Let me have it.. I just hate the thought of carrying something else to open my knives..

I’ve had a knife pick on my keychain ring for about as long as I can remember, for exactly the reason you stated. I don’t use it on my EDC, but if/when opening a lot of blades or a stiff one is encountered, it’s handy when needed. It’s just like another key on the ring so not bothersome carrying it, at least not to me.

Just realize that the pick can slip off the nick and possibly scratch the blade, so don’t use it on a valuable collectable unless you’re very careful.

John, I had to use a pick on a new to me knife just this past weekend. I have a Remington knife pick on my car key ring. One of our AAPK members added it to a deal we made a year or so ago. Not sure if it's real or a reproduction, any way it works very well! And thanks again to who ever sent it to me, I apologize for not remembering who it was.

I use a Dime. It's thin enough to get right in the nail nick, and it's tough enough to not bend. If I ever lose it, it only costs 10 cents for another one. Works great for me.

Don't have one of those fancy dancie knife pics? Don't want to spend the money for one? Got one but can't find it right now?

Cut a strip out of a milk jug. Fold it in the middle. Slip it down into the blade well and underneath the knife blade. Pull up. Ta Da. Mechanical leverage at it's best. (A folded business card works just as well)

You've got a great idea and here I went and spent 6 bucks on a real fancy dancie one.
I will use your idea and keep a couple of them at my work bench where I clean my knives.

I have a Rough Rider knife pick. I also made one out of a lime zester tool. Cut off the part with the holes and Profiled both pieces. Part with wood handle for bench and part with holes on my key ring.

I bought this kitchen tool at a garage sale for $1., not knowing it is for zesting Limes. shaving off the rind for cooking. I hack sawed of the business part and put both in a vice and filled down the ends to a step for a knife pick. one for the bench + to carry.
