What is Your Latest Old Schrade?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Thanks guys.

I picked up a sibling to the 899. This is an 898, same knife but with cell handles. Not too bad of shape, snap is awesome.

Well..... I guess OLD is a point of view. I don't think of this one as old but it is almost 50 yo.

For my Old Time collection.
A Schrade-Walden tang stamped 34OT.

It was pretty rusted when I got it..... It cleaned up pretty nicely.

The first listing I have for a Schrade Walden 861 is in a couple pages of a 1947 Schrade Walden catalog.
It is listed as 4" Slim Premium Stock knife with bone stag handles, Turkish clip, sheepfoot & spey blades. The catalog says it has nickel silver liners, bolsters & shield with a milled back.

S-W 861 b.jpg

I found this one floating in the bay and though there were six other people bidding on it for some reason it came to me pretty inexpensively. The front peach seed bone handle is good, no noticeable cracks. The back bone handle has rather obviously been repaired, but the repairs seem to be sound. All three blades have good snap and since the 861/61OT is my favorite Schrade Stockman pattern, this one is now getting a lot of pocket time!

S-W 861 c.jpg
S-W 861 d.jpg

I don't know how old this is, but judging from the peach seed bone and the tang stamp, Schrade/Walden/N.Y., I would think it was probably made in between 1946 to the early 1950s. If anyone has a more specific date, I would love to know it.
It does have a milled back, though the milling has been worn down from years of pocket carry.

I was really tickled to get my favorite Stockman pattern Schrade Walden with peach seed bone without doing permanent damage to my wallet! ::nod::

Glad to see an oldie 861 go to a good home Dale. ::tu::

I think you are about as close as anybody can get estimating it to be '46 to early 50's. The cut co number for the pattern was 8613 so they go back a ways. The 61ot picked up when the 861 was discontinued, and the 61ot went on into the 90's. Pretty long run time for the pattern; really an outstanding pattern in any of its forms. I'm not sure why it doesn't get more recognition.

That was before my time. I remember we had an old rotary phone mounted on the wall in the kitchen of the house I grew up in. I recall bumping my head on it a lot, maybe that's what's wrong with me. :D

Here are two more gun show finds;
The first is a Schrade Cut Co. scout/camp knife with peachseed bone. I couldn't find any cracks in the bone even with 65 X magnification. I like the strap bail as opposed to the wire bail in the old can opener. Does anyone know what these can openers are called? I seem to remember being at can opener but I'm not sure if that's correct. The blade is down a bit on this one but that's about the only fault I can find with this knife. If anyone's interested make me an offer, it's in my store.

The other Schrade Cut Co. I found at the gun show is this automatic. It fires hard and long some good the slide doesn't lock the button. In the blades is just a little proud. I think it needs to go to a switchblade mechanic for a tuneup, I don't work on them. It's also available if anyone's interested, send me a PM.

Our # in Baker, Montana was 609. Lawler Drug was 78J. My Mother, when younger, did work a switchboard for the phone company there in the late 1930s. I popped in as an elementary age kid in the 1950s and watched the ladies pull the cords out of the switchboard and into another spot, ad infinitum. And then there were the party lines. Nosy old biddies eavesdropping- standard deal.

I didn't think I'd see any hands raised!

I looked up the town of Madison, KA from the knife and it's population is still under 700 and I don't think there's even a stoplight. The knife is a Geo Schrade so it's probably 30's or 40's, maybe even 50s? In my earliest memories phone numbers were already standardized to 7 digits / no letters but the phone we had when I was very young was a typical black rotary dial that was provided by New York Telephone Co. Back then you didn't buy a telephone - you leased it from the phone company. Not sure if it was like that everywhere. Anyway, that old phone still had the telephone number on it from when it was originally given to us and it started with MA4. It just occurred to me that everyone younger than me probably has no idea why phones have letters on them. ::hmm::

I kept this old phone - please don't tell Ma Bell!

Nice of you to drop by Ken! I think that stag with the filed backsprings is one of my all-time favorites. Just a classic look! I'm glad you like it. ::handshake::

Picked up a couple of decent user grade bones to mess around with. The 879 has some good, strong springs.
