Weird Uncle Henry
Hi, I was wondering if someone could answer some questions about an Uncle Henry I purchased recently on ebay. It has Schrade + USA 834UH on the tang. It has black Delrin saw cut handles without a shield, and brass bolsters instead of nickel silver. I haven't seen another one like it, and was hoping someone could tell if it was a common knife or some kind of limited edition. Attached are some pics.
Thanks

Re: Weird Uncle Henry
Looks like one of the Copenhagen Snuff promo knives that didn't get its shield for some reason.
The Skoal Version was made the same with green scales
The Cope knife is from this ebay listing

Re: Weird Uncle Henry
I'd say a Cope over-run knife that they left the etch and shield off of.

The sheeps foot is different than on the cope knife it had a serrated blade.I will try to find my picture.
Found it.Like the others said it is probably from that series and just using up parts.

Also notice the tang stamp it says schrade-cope usa.
Pull on the blade is also different. The box it came in was also a plain white box like yours with Cope printed on it.

Thanks for the info., guys. That helps clear up the mystery.
Good looking knives! The black and brass makes a sharp looking knife (no pun intended).

I have been wondering what the cross after the SCHRADE on the tang means on some knifes.
His Uncle Henry has it. The Cope knifes do not.
Does the CROSS mean factory second...or runover or something?
One of my Schrades has this cross also...I am not at home I think it is a Black 708 pen knife.

Hey Unk,
Welcome to AAPK.
Schrade made so many variants and SFOs (Special Factory Order) that almost nothing surprises me any more when it comes to Schrade patterns.
Here are my 4 best guesses as to the origin of your knife:
> What you may have is an over run of a SFO for someone.
> It could also be a Cope frame with a standard 834 blade in it.
> It could also be something put together at the end-of-days. Just before Schrade went out of business they were putting together all sorts of knives with blades that did not normally go in them.
> There was also plenty of that happening with the left over parts that were purchased from the bankruptcy sale.
It is hard to give you a definitive answer, but those are the most likely scenarios, IMHO.
Here is an example of a SFO made for Purina, though it is not marked with Purina’s name.
I hope this helps,
Dale
PS- Johnnie you are right…………..the SCHRADE + indicates stainless.
However the inverse of that statement is not true: the absence of the + sign does NOT mean that the blade is carbon steel. Sometimes they marked the stainless with a + sometimes they didn’t. The use of the + sign was later on in the company’s history. Lt would know for sure, but I don’t recall seeing many + signs before the 1980s, though I could be mistaken on that matter.

Thanks for the info and the welcome, Dale. My knife reminds me of the old Johnny Cash song, about him making his Cadillac "One Piece at a Time".

Believe it or not Mike, that happened also.
Occasionally workers would make themselves a knife that didn’t necessarily follow a prescribed pattern number. The name usually given these knives is “lunchbox knife.”
A lunchbox knife is another possible explanation of the origin of your knife, however I feel it is most likely an overrun of a SFO. As I recall, Schrade would make a few extra of each SOF for warranty replacements.
Whatever the source of your knife, it is a nice find. I personally like the brass bolsters and black Delrin handle combination. I think they should have made some patterns in that combination for their standard production.
I hope you stick around AAPK and enjoy the knife talk & the companionship. There are some very knowledgeable folks here, and most everyone is quite nice.
Be sure to check out the Knife Lore forum. Our resident expert on all thinks Schrade, Richard Langston, hangs out at Knife Lore. He is especially knowledgeable on the older Schrades, and has a book out on old American switchblades; “The Collectors Guide to Switchblade Knives.”
Enjoy yourself at AAPK,

Weird Uncle Henry II - The Sequel
I must have a penchant for attracting these.....
I just received this in the mail today. I bought it secondhand off ebay to carry everyday. It is a 2 3/4 inch 807UH junior stockman, but when I got to looking closely at it, I noticed it is mis-marked as a 804UH. I guess the 804 and 807 used the same clip blade?, so they used whichever one they had.....

I bet it was an interesting time those last few months and the following months after they closed the doors. It would be an interesting story talking to the workers there and knowing all the little things that went on.

Good looking knife, Thawk. Now I can't decide whether I like it better in brass or silver.

Re: Weird Uncle Henry
Speaking of mis-marked Schrades, is there a thread going about mis-marked Schrades on this forum? I wonder if it impacts the value up or down - or not at all?
Just curious. It would be interesting to see other examples from the end-of-days.

That would probably be a good question to ask 100 years from now UNK.
Can you imagine our great grand children very old and debating over the tang stamps on 150 year old Schrades!

Re: Weird Uncle Henry
From my observation, most of the time the odd stamped ones are less to purchase. The question of whether or not they are production models, or end of days throw together knives keep bidders off guard. It is always a good point of discussion. If it is suspected it was a rare production model, then the price may be higher. I can assure you, the debates will continue, and the information likely to be more sketchy.

Re: Weird Uncle Henry
I think strange and unusual models are not unique to the end-of-days at Schrade.
LT often says that; “Any thing is possible with Schrade.” His implication is that it is anything within reason. I think he is right.
