One more Casexx This one has me stumped

I have a knive that I cannot seem to track down. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. It is a Case but I have no idea what the handles are made of. They appear to be either a faint yellow or a yellowed white. The one side had a mermaid etched on it. The main blade is stamped Case XX Stainless USA, leading me to believe it was made in the mid to late 1960's. The other blade is just stamped 278 that is it, no handle material identification. It is in very nice shape with very little if any sharpening. I would like to know approx value and anything else about the knife that anyone can tell me.

I am guessing that that would be pattern number 78. Bryan does not have it listed though.

Most of the Case knives I have seen in that model are advertisement or political knives with plastic handles.

This one sure looks nice no matter what the material.

It is a 78 pattern. Handles are white delrin. Case did not introduce that pattern until about 1978...so either there are one or two dots there or its just a bad tang stamp maybe the dots got buffed off.

The 78 was an inexpensive pattern and they never used the conventional numbering system....just the number 78.

I am not an expert in any way, but I have watched several 78 pattern knifes lately and they general don't bring much $ 20 dollars if your lucky.

However, I would guess that little lady on the knife would raise the value quite a bit. Heck I would pay $ 30 or $ 40 for it, I would bet there would be someone that would pay more.

I have one of those.I don't think the handles are Delrin I really don't know what they are They seem to be harder and a lot shinier than Delrin? Anyway here is the pic of the one I have. 1978 and I saw it in a price guide it listed for $30. I can't seem to find it now will keep looking.

The stamp on the handle reads 1879-1979 cenn. year With the Bradford Pa. city seal.

Hello everyone,

Just an update on the knife. Upon checking the main blade over very carefully and positioning it just about every way possible, I foubd the dot. There is just one making a 1979, it is very difficuly to see. I noticed one thing about this knife compared to my other Case knives. The liners which are made of brass seem to be considerably tihcker than the brass liner on my other ones.

Bighead you really make a good point about Delrin. I started carrying one as one of my regulars a few months ago, and the Delrin is already getting pretty beat up...it is pretty soft. Makes a nice used look though.

Hi folks - first time poster here.

I found this thread via Google, whilst trying to identify a Case pocket knife that my father bought me from the US (I'm in the UK), 27 years ago. I'd figured out that it was a pattern #78, and that it was made in 1981, but found little more about it until I found this thread. So, thanks!

I don't know if this knife pattern had a name, rather than just "78", or what the scales are made from.





I'm not a knife collector (although my weakness for collecting Leatherman tools has yielded a few knives along the way), but this Case XX is a nice little thing, and of course has great sentimental value for me.

If anybody has any other info on this knife - I'd really appreciate it.
