Another whittle post...

Post by TM »

Hey guys - Don and Keith have inspired me to make some carvings!

I started out with a Congress and a chunk of pine. The pine was really tough. I went to visit the hobby store and picked up some balsa and a few inexpensive carving tools with exchangable blades.

The wood and tools made a huge difference. Here are my first 'stabs' at trying to turn something out other than shavings....

Thanks, Don!

I've always liked drawing and painting but the only things I've ever carved were pumpkins. I like tribal masks, statues, idols and Tiki gods and would like to start making some stuff like that.

I used a knight chess piece for a visual reference on that horse. For me, the learning curve on this carving thing is making something that's 3-D; drawings are generally flat. When you're carving a face, you have to think about the profile and back while you're working on the front.
