First, welcome!! Glad ta have ya!!
Nice knife.
The most common answer to "what is my knife worth?" is going to be, "Search ebay for sold items of what you have and see what the average sell price was."

Hello! The best way to get value is to search the EBay completed sales. The pictures of your knife, particularly of the tang stamps are very out of focus and not usable. That appears to be a Doctor's Knife - probably a # 6285 or 5285? The blades appear to be quite worn, which will hurt the value.

Very unique to see a dr knife with a clip blade. First I've ever seen. That can be interpreted 2 ways. ::shrug::

Same thought I had. Pictures are too poor to tell much but that blade is not original to the knife.

There are some Dr. knives with clip main blade but not a lot of them. I pretty much avoided the ones I saw because I preferred a spear blade.

I couldn't tell you Ken. That was back in my knife knowledge childhood. Back when I was accumulating Doctor knives I didn't know "Case Tested" from a McDonalds Big Mac. Really testing my memory which is flaky to begin with, I want to say all I saw were made in some other country. ::shrug::

The clip blade does not look like a Case Tested XX clip blade to me - regardless of whether an 85 had a clip or not. My reason for saying this is the size of the blade tang - too tall and out of proportion to the rest of the blade.

They did. There were at least two different versions, one with a pen secondary and one with a spatula. There was also an 81 pattern (3-1/8 inches), an 82 pattern (2-3/4 inches) and an 082 pattern (2-7/8 inches). All doctors knives and available with two blades and in several different handle materials.

Thanks for the clarification Jerry. To my knowledge there have been no Case doctor’s knives having anything other than a spear master blade. Thought maybe you had seen one with a clip.

Thanks Ken - what confused me is that Knifeaholic said this about the 85:
Beginning with the CASE XX tang stamp, the 85 pattern was made only as a single blade jack with a spear master blade.
He doesn't talk about the Tested era (or any other era), he just says "Beginning with...". We obviously know there are 6285 knives that came later, but this section of his book is not very clear on what was/wasn't available and when.

As you’ve pointed out, there is extensive Case history not covered in Steve’s book. Thats not at all a knock on it. The book is great and the most thorough reference I know of for Case XX through the 1970/80 timeframe, which is the book’s area of focus. Not much there about Case Tested and earlier knives, but given Case’s long history it’s a really big subject to tackle. Plus I doubt information in the depth to which Steve goes in his book is available for earlier periods. Very few catalogs, factory records and other materials are available, plus the people who would know are no longer with us.

For Case Tested, Case Bradford, Case Brothers etc I recommend Jim Sargent’s American Premium Guide to Knives, which is the best reference I know of for early Case, from Case Brothers and W.R. Case Company through the Case XX era. It contains limited prose, but literally hundreds of pages of clear photographs of actual knives, examples of the patterns available during those older eras. Sargent’s is a different approach and format than Steve Pfeiffer’s Collecting Case Knives.

If you’re a Case collector, you need both books. There are others but those are the two I rely on the most.

Page 241 of Sargent's 7th lists a 62086 1/2, doctor's knife, made in both stag and early Rogers bone. However, the photo knife in Sargent's has a long pull on the clip blade.

I concur that knife is not original and master blade is a replacement so value can't be compared to that of an original in any condition.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Another great book on older Case Knives is by Tom McCandless “ olderdogs1 “ it has history on the Case Bros, Bradford, etc...
