how do german mark thier 2nds?

I have recently noticed that quite a few german knives out there have a small indentation stamped on the tang either on the tangstamp or above the tangstamp. It is like a little bar maybe 1/8" long and was wondering if this was the german's way of marking thier seconds? I have seen everal different brands and patterns with the same little mark, it has to be there for a reason?

On Bulldog knives for their Anglo-Saxon there is a CS for cosmetic second. They have a few that have a shield mounted slightly off center on Pearl Anglo-Saxon knives. This is for the crest or Heraldic shield that I've seen it on. No problems on the Bar shield and I don't know if it was the long or short crest shield, I'd have to look it up.
