Floyd, that looks better than the one I remember sending to you. Let me check and see if I sent the wrong one.

Joining my Camillus 72 variation family today is another Schrade 863, 3 blade, swelled center, "whittler" pocket knife. It definitely needed a thorough cleaning, it received one. The "before" pictures are here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46672&start=1740#p777425

Soon to join my illustrious family of Camillus 72 variations, is this Camillus 80. I don't anticipate having to do any kind of cleaning, as this knife looks to be in FANTASTIC condition. My first pattern 80 and I can't wait. I'll post MY pictures when I receive it. These are the seller's pictures.

Re: Camillus 72 Clones
Yesterday, these three pocket knives found their way to my Camillus 72 variation collection. They are, (2) CRAFTSMAN 9494s and a BEAR MGC, Scout knife. The two CRAFTSMAN knives needed some cleaning, the BEAR MGC did not. I really don't see what all the fuss about the BEAR MGC is/was. All 3 blades have a snap that would embarrass a crocodile. None of the blades have any degree of wobble. The handles are in great shape. The blade etch is clear, clean and present. The tang stamp is clear and deep. Again, I do not intend to use the BEAR MGC, it's just for my collection. Bottom line, I'm pleased with it and that's all that really matters. These are MY pictures. Click on a picture to ENLARGE.

Re: Camillus 72 Clones
Very soon, this pocket knife will be added to my collection. Yet another Camillus 72 variation, a FORGED USA pocket knife. FORGED USA was one of Sears Roebuck & Company's trademark names and was made for them by the Camillus Cutlery Company. When I receive it, I will give it the once over, take some pictures and post them in the appropriate location(s). Here's what it looks like now.

Re: Camillus 72 Clones
Hey Skip or whoever else knows,
Why are 72 Clones considered to be "Clones" ?
Was Camillus the first to produce or introduce this particular pattern years ago?
Makeing their #72 Pattern the "Original"?
And if so, like if that is the explanation for the use of the word "Clones", what about other knife patterns & other knife makers? Are there any other patterns out there considered to be the "Original" but often "Cloned"?
I'm really interested to hear & learn more about this topic if there is more to know about it.
However, if this is a huge topic, cause I really have no idea, & I'm opening a big can of worms here, it would be cool & informative for many of us if someone started a new topic like "Originals & their Clones" where we could see a larger spectrum of "Originals" vs "Clones".
Thanks for the "Input",
Tom

Hi Tom. When I chose this topic, I used the wrong terminology. I should've used the term "variation" rather than "clone." I love the Camillus 72 pattern, so I chose to collect "variations" of it. If I had, lets say, been a big fan of the Ulster 63 pattern, then I would've started a topic on Ulster 63 "variations." I believe to be a true "clone", the "cloned" subject has to be an exact replica/duplicate/copy of the original. I do regret using the word "clone."
***** Definition Of Clone Per Merriam-Webster Dictionary *****
(Entry 1 of 2)
1a : the aggregate of genetically identical cells or organisms asexually produced by or from a single progenitor cell or organism
b : an individual grown from a single somatic cell or cell nucleus and genetically identical to it
c : a group of replicas of all or part of a macromolecule and especially DNA
clones of identical recombinant DNA sequences
2 : one that appears to be a copy of an original form : DUPLICATE
a clone of a personal computer
clone verb
cloned; cloning
Definition of clone (Entry 2 of 2)
transitive verb
1 : to propagate a clone from
2 : to make a copy of
intransitive verb
: to produce a clone
