what do ya'll look like?

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

Where was the picture taken? I see a pretty big ship on the background.
SamB, Thanks for asking. Here's a brief answer to your question and a bit of back history.

Where I was standing, was at the very top of what is called "The Hammerhead Crane"...no longer in use. This crane used to be the largest on the East Coast. It was mainly used in the 70's & 80's to lift the 16 inch gun turrets off the battleships for repair or refurbishment. The large building at the base of the crane is where they would work on the turrets. It was built in 1940, weighs 5 million pounds and is 260 feet high. It hasn't been used since 2001 and the Shipyard and stockholders are still in limbo as to what to do with it. They no longer want to spend 1.7 million per year to maintain it. Just not cost effective anymore. This crane is located on the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Va. I retired from there after 20 years in 2017. I'm afraid of heights, but I had always wanted to 'go up there' during my tenure at the SY. So, when the opportunity presented itself, I sucked up all the courage I could that day and walked up the outside of the cabin area to the area where the catwalk was. ::dang:: If it had been windy, I wouldn't have gone up. But it was a nice calm and sunny day. BUT...I was happy to be back on solid ground after being up there for about an hour. It's one of my better adventurous memories. ::groove::

Here's a couple of photos. In my photo, I was standing at the very end of the catwalk next to the red warning altitude light. The ship you see in my photo was either the USS Saipan or the USS Wasp. They were departing the Shipyard after completion of work. The river is the Elizabeth River, Portsmouth, Va.
I'm a little late to the party, LJ...but that is darn cool, on a lot of levels! (Pun intended) ::tu:: ::tu:: ::tu::

I got surprise partied for my birthday. Here’s me and my sons Danny and Josh with Josh’s brand new Aurora. The goofy group is me and Aurora, Danny and his daughter Lexie, who is seven, and Josh and Ty (Aurora’s parents) with Ty’s five year old son, Tony.

It was fun, Tom. I brought a few folders to show Herb but he had a box of his handy work to show me. Fastest 3 hour lunch I ever had, will have to do again soon! ::tu::

Jenny looks very similar to the dog that is currently staying with me, Otis. Otis is darker but the faces are very close.
