Schradebone!!

Post by upnorth »

I thought it would be interesting to compare the different kinds of jigging found on the Schrade Cut Co knives, so I scrunched these jacks in here and blew up a pic, hoping for a sage word out there, from those who have been at it longer, and who know more than me!
Looks like three general categories to me! What say you all??

You got the eye, Fran! Picked it right away! Hammered steel pins, curved stamp. Oldest one there likely.

Love the jigged bone on those oldies, Superb Schrades. We know these days most of the production knives have handles were the jigging has been done by machine, take a look at any Case knife from the present, those two or three little grooves in the jigging, just does not have the character of the past.

upnorth how would you catergorize the 3, if that is what you meant? I know nothing about Schrade, so do you mean 3 different types of jigging, color, or both maybe? Great looking knives, ALL!

It's all about Jigging!
Brad, left to right, I THINK they are newest to oldest. So, the left three have peachseed jigging, the middle three have some kind of machine-assisted jigging, and I categorize the last three as hand-picked jigging, or "pickbone", done way-back-when.
I may be off base, so please correct me if I am wrong folks! I am just a beginner compared to a lot of guys here!

(edited to correct order of newest-to-oldest ::doh:: )

More Schrade bone. O.K, O.K, it's been cleaned!! I admit it  !
At the risk of offending all purists, including myself  I will post this knife!!
Having heard so much about Herbie Aycock of S.C. from the Case collectors, I had to see what all the foofaraw was about. So, I bought this knife cleaned by him, according to the seller who had it done. He's (Herbie) been retired for a while, but was considered the only guy who could respectfully and correctly restore a finish similar to a factory fresh knife. I don't know if I am doing the right thing by even mentioning it, but there is something compelling about his work. This little knife has the right glazed finish on the blades, with a high polish on the front of the main, that looks like a crocus polish. Except for a couple of specks, most couldn't tell this from mint. The thing that belies it for me, is the main blade does not appear full. Seems to be down a smidgen. I heard Herbie would dull the blades, so he wouldn't cut himself, then resharpen them at the end. The bone is gorgeous, and the snap is vigorous; one of the few cleaned knives I find somehow satisfying! I think I don't mind, because it's a pretty common pattern, and I have a few nicely patina-ed ones. I also still do NOT advocate cleaning knives. In the balance of pros and cons, I still prefer honest wear and staining from age and use.
As perverse as this sounds, I also think Herman Williams is a match for old Herbie. We've probably all seen Herman's work, possibly without noticing. It's a tricky world out there!! ::paranoid::
Enjoy!

Charlie,
I hear the cry of your tortured soul! I feel your pain, and because you are such a great guy (really you are), I will gladly relieve you of this burden should it ever become unbearable.

Seriously though, that is one fine looking knife! I can’t tell from the pic that it has been cleaned, other than the fact that it looks too minty for it’s age. He did a fine job cleaning it, of that there is no doubt. The handles are gorgeous, but I think you are right about the blades being down ever so slightly. All in all, a fine addition to any collection. Congratulations. ::tu::

Put here for ease of comparison and maybe not a Schrade, but alledged to be off a Schrade factory board, This A. Field & Co. ( 1836 - 1942 ) is over Progress, which according to BLR 3 should be as agents for Joseph Rodgers & Son or George Korn.

This sure looks to me to match the bone and jigging of Upnorth's 3 Schrades on the left ( above ) " the newest".

Any more knowledgeable opinions ?

Fran

Hello UPNORTH, You have some of the most awesome and rare knives that I have ever seen. My opinion for what it is worth, the arched tang stamp is by far the oldest, my reasons are simple, the iron hammered pins, and the long pull goes all the way to the tang, not too mention that gorgeous picked bone(just an awesome knife, exactly the way I like them). Thx Mark
