Enlighten me
Why would anyone pay that kind of money for this shell handle knife?

Because he or she wanted the knife and had the money?

Re: Enlighten me
Well Sir, that is a very nice knife for what it was meant to be and as a "Collector" I would love to have that particular knife under glass in my collection. To me it represents a historical period and a part of Imperial's history. Having said that, NO Bloody Way would I pay that much! If you look at the bidding history it would seem a bunch of mind numb folks got carried away over a pretty picture and someone got stuck paying way to much.tongueriver wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2019 1:38 am Why would anyone pay that kind of money for this shell handle knife?

Re: Enlighten me
I've seen people pay way more for way less, just because of getting caught up in a bidding war.
At auction, I once saw two idiots bid a Chinese made Remington trapper in fake abalone to over $200. The loser should have bought the winner a steak dinner.

It looks to be mint. Not many of those around in the wild.
Not that I would pay that either, but it is nice for what it is.

Yup....if it fits, or completews the collection, you do what you gotta do.
I had it happen once and I was like, ok then.....

Re: Enlighten me
That is high. I don't like spending more than $10-15 on shell handles (that are in good condition). I like them a lot and they are great when had for typical prices.

Looks like the winner really wanted it. Nice looking knife. Not sure if it is worth what
it went for but someone thought so. Hope it went to a good home.

Re: Enlighten me
Nice Imperial.
May even have hollow sheet bolsters secured by folded tabs?
I would invest $20.00, perhaps $25.00 max.
Would be for historic display only.
Knife was most likely originally sold on a "Carded Knife Display" for 99cents or so, each.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That's what makes this hobby that we all enjoy special. Sure, a shell handled Imperial might not be for everyone (I like it alot though! ). I love the two tone colors, reminds me of the classic cars from the 50s with the two tone paint schemes. Was the price too high?

For a minty piece like that, I would probably go as high as $30-35, but that about it.

Re: Enlighten me
In my opinion, of which I can't prove, just pure speculation based on the bidding history for this knife, it appears there was a shiller working this listing. He/she bid 23 times on this knife, with their last bid 12 minutes before the listing ended. This person just kept raising and raising the price...and then backed out. One of the reasons I no longer buy on the bay. It's become a racket for a lot of unscrupulous people, and it really hurts those who are legitimately trying to conduct an honest business.
