Very good photo of that Coopers Hawk, Scott. I have a hard time getting them to sit still long enough for me to focus on them.

Too kool Scott ::tu:: .
And I wish I was down in your area right now! :wink: . Well, it was a super nice day today, if it keeps up I could live with winter. Not much for birds right now, did see a raven and what looked like a sparrow, chomping on ole sunflower seeds. He was gone before I could snap a pic or too.

Here are a couple of photos of one of my favorite birds: the Brown Thrasher. What I like best about the Thrasher is that it makes a peculiar call like a knocking right at dusk. If you have ever hunted the woods of the Southeast you have probably heard the Thrasher making its call at twilight. Often you can hear it flying away through the bushes when it stops calling. I have heard a veteran deer hunter remark that when the Thrasher stops calling and flies away to its roost, then the day is over and it is nighttime: time to leave the stand. I do not hunt these days, but I am fortunate enough to have a few Thrashers in a brushy area behind my back yard. So I still get to hear the Thrasher calling on occasion.

They do not usually get on my feeders, but I do see them scratching around in the leaves under my trees. They are kind of shy about coming out into the open because the Mockingbird, the Thrasher's close cousin, cannot abide the sight of a Thrasher and relentlessly harasses any that they can spot.

I definitely enjoy Brown Thrashers. Only get a few in season who are just passing thru, but they are definitely ground feeders. Years ago, back in Chicago during migrations, Grant Park on the lake front was filled with scores of B. Thrashers.

I appreciate the comments about my Thrasher post. Here is one more photo. I think that the Thrasher's favorite food is Poke berries. When I was a boy growing up in the country Poke was considered a weed and I hoed plenty of it out of the garden. For the past several years I have allowed several Poke plants to reach their full size in my back yard. Poke can easily reach six feet tall and four feet across, at least in my climate. Many birds feast on the berries, chief among them being Mockingbirds, Cardinals, and Thrashers.

I was on a long walk with the dog and came across these Trumpeter swans. It won't mean much to you folks who live in the North and Northwest in their breeding range , where they may be a common sight. However, when they come down the Mississippi Flyway to spend a little time in the winter, it is kind of a big deal around here. They have come a long way, population-wise, in the last 20 to 30 years.
Crappy photo, I was zooming in with my phone but maybe you get a hint of the magnificence of these birds.

Very interesting, Waukonda. Where are you located? The terrain in that photo looks flat enough to be the Mississippi flood plain. I have never seen a Trumpeter swan - I do not know if my area was ever part of their winter range. Certainly not now.

In years past when we visited Jackson Wy. I always enjoy the swans who hang around the warm ponds. Wonderful birds. ::nod:: ::nod::
