It's actually the only Case I have so far but that will likely change! This one is in nice condition - opens with authority and locks up with no movement at all. Nice stag scales and solid thick blade! It's hard not to like these old Case knives.

Case Tested XX model 5171L lever-release
I hope this one qualifies as a Case Classics.
It's actually the only Case I have so far but that will likely change! This one is in nice condition - opens with authority and locks up with no movement at all. Nice stag scales and solid thick blade! It's hard not to like these old Case knives.

is the bale rare? all the pics i have are sans bail and some rear bolsters are stamped as well.

Yes, the bail is original. I only know of one other with an original bail. We know that customers could add a bail for a couple of dollars when they ordered the knife - and it was put in at the CASE factory. All this information came from someone who used to work in the factory and was interviewed years ago. According to a price list from WR Case which was with the old tested era blue cover catalog, you could get a bail added to any pattern that did not come stock with a bail for a charge of $1.20 net per dozen.
