Hammer Brand with Imperial Blade

Post by popcornpicker »

I got a Hammer Brand jack knife off of the bay. The main blade has the Hammer tang stamp from 1945-1955. The secondary blade has an Imperial tang stamp from 1936-1952. I doubt that anyone replaced the blade on a 69 cent knife. Did they just run out of blades that day? Does anyone have something similar?

imperial bought the hammer brand(new york knife co. closed in 1931) in 1936 and used it on their shell handled knives.

I understand that Imperial owned Hammer. I also understand that Felix Mirando, who was the president of Imperial, owned the patent on shell handle knives. That is why so many have the patent #2170537 on the secondary blade. I have a bunch of Hammer Brand knives, but this the only one with this marking. Any comments are appreciated.

I have quite a few knives made by Imperial which have the Hammer Brand logo on the tang. Without exception they also have U.S.A. stamped beside the "Hammer Brand" logo. I don't think it's particularly surprising that a blade with this stamping would be found in an Imperial knife, especially since Imperial had purchased the "Hammer Brand" trademark from New York Knife. There is an illustration of Imperial (including Hammer Brand) stampings somewhere on this site which shows Imperial using the "Hammer Brand" stamping without the U.S.A. but I have yet to personally see one. By the way, I have a knife with the "Hammer Brand U.S.A." stamping which has solid bolsters and rough black celluloid handles which I am convinced is an Imperial produced knife.

I also have several New York Knife manufactured knives which have the "Hammer Brand" logo on the main blade. On all of these knives, there is no "U.S.A." stamped beside the "Hammer Brand" logo.

Hammer Brands without a USA marking were made between 1936 and 1941.

Here is an Imperial Hammer Brand with pat. #s on the secondary.
Is this what you were referring to?

that little beast i posted does not have USA on the tang...hammer on top...brand stuck between the edge of the blade and the arm and hammer...?
it does have patent numbers...2037943 over, 21[7]0437...bracketed 7 could be a worn two...
