Nail marks on Case Bolsters...and Shields.

I thought it was strange that this knife had very pronounced nail/pin marks on both sides of the shield. I went and looked and maybe saw a faint mark on one or two of my older Case Shields. I really need to get a good magnifying glass! Are these marks normal?

This Case knife is also a good example of a very pronounced Bolster nail mark.....which brings up the question why are some bolsters mark free, some with a faint circle and others very pronounced...sometimes all three on the same knife?

i am new to this..but aren't the pins that stand out like that loose in the bolster? the knife was stressed?

Kinda what I was wondering if was a sign that the knife could have been rebladed...or like you thought of at least stressed.

The two marks on the shield really threw me for a loop though...I think I read somewhere where shields used to be pinned...now the process is different.....I can't remember exactly when that change was made with Case.

lot of times when you see one with a sunk in pen like that it has been used to pry something with or just used alot (imo) probably got a little blade wobble to go along with it
as for the shield id say its for sure pinned on--dont no why some are so much more noticeable than others..
im not sure when case started gluing on the shields but you see alot of 90s knives with no shields--maybe that was before they got the recipe right---they muyst have used elmers glue for awhile..

I figured out where I read that..........................IT WAS FROM BRYAN'S SITE AAPK!

He says that after the late 70's they were glued on!

Very interesting though Mike...............I love some of the inbetween knifes in the 80's with no Shield.

Just never saw a shield before where the pinning on was so noticable.

It's not that uncommon on the shields. I think this knife has been buffed real hard on the bolsters and handles and that's likely why the pins stand out. If you put any bolster on a buffing wheel, the pin will start to show through quick.

This one looks used to me. Look at where the blade meets the tang. There's no "v" there in either blade. My knives get that way from honing them. As far as the sunken hinge pin, I would think it has been opened a lot. And maybe have been used to pry something lightly. But this is my two cents. I could be all wet?

I agree! This blade looks far from unsharpened..!

That knife has been used quite a bit, and "buffed"! The "v" is called the "choil".
