Hi, All;
I just want to tell you folks on this forum, of the enjoyment that I have received from your company, comments, humor,and condolences on my perceived problems. The thing that has finally caused me to finally hang it all up, was today, seeing some pore guy's lifetime knife collection dumped into a none knife related auction, held near our home, to be sold for a 1¢, on the $1.00. by his family. I realize that is what will happen to all of my collections, whether it be, guns, motorcycles, motor scooter, or many other things that I've collected over the years. One cannot expect his family to take on their parent's collections, that they are not interested in at all, to be disposed of, in any other way. Sad but true. It is one of the hardest things that I'v ever had to do, and I won't drag it out any longer. THANKS.

The way I look at is after I'm gone it won't make any difference to me what they do with my things. Guess we're all different though

If my heirs want to sell my stuff for a penny on the dollar ... well it is not going to affect me at that point. Did you get in on the bargain knives at that auction?

I would hope that when i am gone, my son will enjoy my knives the way I do. But that will probably not be the case. However, I would not stop doing what I am enjoying right now in concern for what will happen when I am gone. Life is too short to not enjoy the things you love.

Yes, I agree. That should not be a thing that affects life today.

My parents were big collectors of a variety of items. When they passed, we (their children) selected the things that meant the most to us, then we let our close friends and family take what they wanted. After that we sold the rest. There were a few collections that were handled by people that knew the items and how to sell them to other collectors. We also called a few people that we thought might be interested in some things. After that, we brought in someone that holds estate sales and let them run a sale. It took a couple of months to get it all done. It was long, hard & emotional work - and at the end of the day, the money we received was insignificant. It was a fraction of what my parents had spent acquiring the items, and it was also a fraction of what the items might have brought if you had the time and energy to sell each item properly.

A collection is for the collector. I can't speak for other collectors, but for me it is the act of collecting that is the most fun, not the actual ownership of the items. I like learning about each item - researching the history, the details, the construction - all of it. If you handed me a large collection of very valuable knives, sure - I would think that was great - but it would never be *my* collection - it would always be "the collection I got from so & so."

If I had a museum-quality collection of something that was worth hundreds of thousands (or millions) of dollars, then I would make arrangements to have it go to a museum with a plaque with my family name on it. Any collection less than that, it just doesn't matter. All that matters is that *I* enjoyed the years of collecting, and *I* enjoyed having the collection. What happens to it afterwards just doesn't matter.

Sut - not to insinuate any of this applies to you ... but here's what I plan to do "when the time comes" and my time is short & it gives me some sense of comfort. I will contact one of the major knife retailers (SMKW for example has a very active eBay presence selling used knives from estates and they buy knife collections or perhaps some of the AAPK retailers might have an interest). I'm not expecting top dollar - but I'll be comforted to know that my knives will be sold to those who appreciate them & they will not be wasted for pennies on the dollar and wind up with those who don't know knives. Same applies to my guns, all my higher end guitars/amps, fine woodworking hand tools I've been fortunate to own. I will not be worried about the money at that point, I'd want to avoid my finer things going to bottom feeder bidders at a random estate sale ...

After laying my heartfelt feelings out for everyone to see, I intended to make it my very last post, and get out of everyone's hair, but I then read our member Dinadan's post, intended expressly for my enjoyment. I Quote Dinadan "Did you get in on the bargain knives at that auction?" This seems to be typical behavior of some of our Southern Gentlemen, that were on the losing side of the war between the states. Nether he or I had a thing to do with that terrible, unfortunate war, but he, like many others feel the need to keep those bad feelings alive and burning brightly in their minds. I feel no animosity toward him or his kind, and only wish him well. I just wish that I hadn't let him draw me down to his level of thinking. I guess that we are all alike in that respect.

::shrug:: I"m not seeing anything offensive in Dinadan's post, nor any previous connection, or reference, anywhere to the "war between the states".

Where did that come from? ::shrug::

Sut - I apologize for my comment. I did not intend for it to be insensitive or offensive. Perhaps, in the context of your post, I was crudely flippant: and for that I apologize.

Actually, I do not know where you are located in the United States, or the world, for that matter. So whatever my intentions in my post, I assure you that hurting you because of the Civil War was not intended.

Hi, All;
I would like to address this apology to all of AAPK's members, especially to Dinadan, and Mumblepeg. I have put this matter off to long, and can't live with myself, until I do it. There is no excuse for the hateful things that I said, especially to those two gentlemen, who both have befriended me in the past. I'll just say that a whole lot of things came together in my life at that time, and I opened my yap, and said hateful things. I don't expect to be forgiven, but I will give my sincere apology. I believe that when one lets their life's stressful situations overcome their good judgment, they shouldn't take part in discussions, so I no longer will.
