Box or no Box

I was cleaning and checking on some knives I keep boxed and was wondering how you guys keep yours. Do you keep new boxed knives in their boxes or someway else? Its easier for me to store them in the box but it is more trouble that way, not to mention the wear and tear on the boxes. I get them out a couple of times a year and put mineral on the bone and stags, and ren-wax the blades and bolsters. So how do you knifers do it? THANKS

I keep most new and unused knives in the original box when I have it.
Users are kept in a roll…or just lying around in drawers, on the desk or…

All my knives are easily accessible in these Tuff-Tainer polypropylene boxes, and all my knife boxes are labelled and stored away.

I keep all my knives in glass fronted display cases.With the boxes in another big box.But I don't keep the displays out in the light.(fading of color not good)I have a storage area set aside in a closet so I can get em out easy and look at em

and polish em and look at em and polish em well you get the Idea

Froggy, that's what I've always done but I can't really "enjoy" my knives like I want to and like BIGHEAD was talking about. I was going through a bunch of CASE knives I hadn't got out of the boxes this year and had forgotten I even had a few of them. One in particular was a BLUE bone CASE trapper that I didn't know I had. I love the BLUE bone knives and had actually been watching for one of these. It was a very pleasant surprise opening that box. (it has it labeled on the box but I didn't look).

Edgewise, I remember when you got those see thru boxes and there was a discussion about how the knives would hold up in there. How are yours doing? They look really nice from this end and I like the idea of being able to see them individually like that.

BIGHEAD, you hit the nail on the head my friend. I don't want to add wear to the boxes as I mentioned BUT the main reason is I want better access to them. You old fellow knife "fondler" you

One thing I was worried about is not all knife companies label their boxes as well as CASE and if I decided to sell some later on I wouldn't want to get the boxes mixed up and send out the wrong boxes. I don't want to permanately mark my boxes either though. Well thanx guys for your replies.

hey brad, this is a good thread

. i think it's ok either way, as long as they are kept correctly. i have many stored in boxes and many displayed and or ready to fondle

in flannel covered trays. i will save the boxes, not in use "end up" in a bigger box so i can retrieve if necessary. i inspect often,(read "fondle") ain't this fun?

Brad just make an inventory sheet with #'s and put the corresponding # on the box

I do have a couple of dozen new knives stored in their boxes, but I think I probably shouldn't.

Most paper products are acidic, which is why museums use special archival cardboard containers for storage. Damage probably wouldn't be noticed in the short term, but I wonder about long term storage in the factory boxes. Ever see an older knife in the box, even with stainless blades, that's 'mint' except for a hazy, grey look on the polish ?

I'd never leave a cell knife in it's box. They'd be better off in washed cotton on the bottom of your sock drawer.

certain boxes make good storage..like bulldogs lined 2 piece lid box. i like that for my dogs. besides that i like to collect all wooden cigar boxes. up to about 5 days ago i had about 15. now i have about 45-50 since a frined at work heard i collected them and just asked if i wanted them. i line them with just the simple wrags that you use to polish blades. or felt. i have a book which tells me whats in each box.
as i fill a box i stack tehm but only 2-3 high. some knives depending i do have in their cases randomly as well. but the cigar lined box with knives in it just looks beautiful,keeps hem clean,out of light...and when you feel like taking them out to enjoy you just grab a particular box! hope i helped.

Mine are doing fine, probably because I have easy access to them and can pamper them regularly.
All my knife boxes remain in original condition and I can pull out the knives at a moments notice for showing, handling or using without disturbing their boxes.
Those storage boxes are easy to stack in drawers or cupboards, as easy to carry as a large book and hold knives of many sizes. The plastic is neutral so only the humidity is a threat and ren wax takes care of that.
The only thing is that they are not DISPLAY cases and therefore nothing to look at like cherry or walnut glass cases.

But...I like 'em.

Congratulations with that Trapper!

I know the feeling you describe. Been there, done that… And more than once.

My “system” is actually a total lack of system.
But one of these days I shall… (Hm… Sounds kind of familiar…)

Ren-Wax will work to preserve that bone and stag too. I use it on everthing and haven't ever had or heard of anything but good. The pro's use it, and that works for me. Been using it for years. JMO Take care.

I've never heard of a surface that Ren-Wax will not help and preserve, the professional conservators use it on civil-war era leather sheaths, cartridge boxes, canteen covers etc etc. The stuff is awesome, I wonder why more folks don't use it, perhaps they are just not aware of how much good it does for their collectibles, well, really, any surface you want to protect. There is no other wax like it as it is not either beeswax or carnuba, it is stable and its structure is micro-level, thats why it will retard even fingerprints.

THANKS to everyone for your comments on this subject. Johnnie, I agree that either would work as long as the knives are checked to make sure everything is OK. What really got me to thinking about this matter was cleaning/inspecting/"fondling" my knives in the box and how I don't really "enjoy" these knives like others I have. I'm not into knives for the money, but for the love of knives. I do want to keep my mint knives.....mint though. I just have all these knives that never see the light of day except a couple of times a year. So my decision is to display them in some way I can enjoy them more. I have a friend that works at a cabinet making factory and gets me some really nice furniture grade wood. I'm going to just make more display cases and let these knives "breathe".

Froggy it was like Christmas in July when I opened that BLUE trapper! Well last night I found another one. So now I have 2 BLUE CASE trappers in navy blue. I can't believe I was actually cruising ebay to buy one when I had 2 right under my nose. I also came across a regular and tiny Carribean BLUE trapper that I knew I had but hadn't seen for a few months.

So to really enjoy my hobby, I need to get these things out in the open. I feel like most of us on here do it for the love and beauty of a well made knife. Heck I have some that it would be a stretch to call "well made" but I like them for one reason or another. So a big thanks to everyone for telling me how you do it. I'm also gonna grab a couple of those plastic cases like Edgewise has. They look just too handy to pass up.

I also got a scanner after all this time. Now just to figure out how to use the thing so I can start posting pics. I've been coming to this site for about a year and never posted a pic. I know how much I like looking at your pics so maybe someone may enjoy some of my old folders.

Brad, you could also go with a (cheap now) digital camera and a homemade light tent (I made mine out of pvc pipe and sheet material and can lights from maynards, EASY to do, pics come out professional. All of my pics at my store have been taken this way, go take a look. Just a thought, good luck.-Glenn
