Ode To The 07

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Thanks, John.

Here's another one with handle material #4...but, obviously it's not white composition, it's smooth red.

It also has one of my favorite shields.

I was not particularly interested in this knife either, jerryd, for several reasons: I'm not drawn to synthetic handles or gaudy blade etching and I didn't especially like the yellow ribbon "shield". The only reason I got it was because I wanted a Mini T with handle material #4, white composition, and this was the least expensive one I could find.

Once I got it in hand, however, it kind of grew on me. The two-color blade etch looks better in person than it does in photos and the synthetic handle isn't all that bad...at least no worse than my other synthetic handled knives like Corelon or Kirinite, and somewhat better than most colored Delrin (which is flat and dull and very plastic looking to me). I'm still not fond of the yellow ribbon pseudo-shield, but, oh well, it is what it is and at least it's something different from anything else in my collection...so, there's that.

What's interesting is that in searching for a Mini T with #4 handles I discovered that Case uses #4 for more than just white composition. I found Red (see example above), Orange (to be shown later), Blue (with 'Police' theme), and Sunflower (which is fugugly but has a slightly cool engraved bolster).

It came. It didn't get stolen and it's not as colorful in real life as the pictures I took or ~Q~ showed. None the less, I am very satisfied with it. Looks more blue than purple in real life.

When I think of a sunflower, I tend to picture a bright yellow, kind of like the yellow on the John Deere Mini T. The brown and tannish-yellow colors of the Delrin "Sunflower" Mini T look faded or washed out to me (perhaps it's meant to invoke a dried sunflower?) But, faded color notwithstanding, I would still get one if it had a Wharncliffe blade. But, that's just me (...and the Monkey).

I had a single blade 07 on my watch list for awhile called "Kaleidoscope", but, like you with the Sunflower, I hesitated getting it long enough for my interest to eventually fizzle.

Just watch...ten years from now those two will be the rarest and most sought-after Case Mini Trappers by the new generation of knife collectors. ::dang::

Mini T Monkey has been up to his usual hi-jinks, grabbing every Mini Trapper in sight with his greedy little monkey paws.

Here's his latest haul:

2007 Case 6207 SS Jigged White Bone
2007 Case 6207 SS Jigged White Bone
P9130018.JPG
Funny story about this last one...

I already had a 2004 CCC Life Member Allegheny Mtn. Bone in my collection. But, as sometimes happens while surfing the Bay, I found a duplicate model for sale that I felt had nicer bone than mine. I figured I could swap the one I had for the nicer one if I cleverly orchestrated it just right. So, I quickly listed mine for sale and put in what I thought was a high enough snipe bid to win the one I wanted. As fate would have it, however, my snipe bid was not enough and I lost the auction. Then mine sold (for $17 less than the other one, I might add :x ) and I was left with a big empty hole in what was once a more complete collection. Needless to say, this drove OCD Monkey absolutely berserk. Miraculously, the very next day, yet another 2004 CCC Allegheny Mt. Bone showed up for sale. I figured I would just have to pay whatever it took to get it (in order to placate OCD Monkey) and chalk it up to a learning experience. The good news is that I ended up winning the knife...for $12 less than what I sold mine for! :D After fees, shipping, etc., I think I came out ahead by about $6.00 and change. But, the bone on this knife is nearly identical to the one I sold, so it was essentially a wash. Next time I think I'll wait to sell mine until after I have the replacement.

This is another one of those that looks a lot better in person than it does in photos. I'm not normally a big fan of excessive, gaudy, carnival-style etching. but it is a 107W (my favorite type of 07), and at only $40 I just couldn't pass it up.

I'm glad you saw it first. Saves me the angst of obsessing over whether to get it or not. At least it has a Wharncliffe blade which conquers all and makes up for a multitude of faults.

Another fresh-off-the-press 07W from Shepherd Hills. Man, SH sure has been coming up with some nice new 07Ws lately, it's almost as if they can read my mind. I've been wishing for a smooth natural bone Wharncliffe Mini Trapper for a long time and *SHAZAM* one magically appears. I love the clean simplicity of the natural bone...it's like the "ivory" of bone. And, while I would've really liked it to have a diamond shield, the bomb shield is very classy. At $49.99 shipped, the price is reasonable, so I've got no complaints about this one. :D

It's been a very (depending on how you look at it) productive past few days. None are here yet but next week should give me happy feet (unless the post office throws a clinker in the works). Okay, so I went a little crazy. I was a little crazy to start with so it was a very short trip. ::tease::

John, your comment got me to thinking about the difference between White Bone and Natural Bone. I had always just assumed that white bone was bone that had been dyed white and natural bone was undyed. I had to go into my vault to compare my Mini Ts that were labeled "White Bone" with those labeled "Natural Bone". The two on the left are Jigged White Bone, the two in the middle are called Smooth Natural Bone, the second from the right is called Smooth White Bone on the box label (although to me it does not appear to have been dyed), and I don't have a box for the one on the far right but it appears to be Smooth Oiled Bone (don't know if Case ever used that type or not...just my guess based on similar GEC handles I've seen). Curious.

In my continuing effort to be a baaad influence, corrupt otherwise innocent Mini T collectors and corner the market on 07Ws...I found one you might be interested in. If you have any credit left on your card after your first-of-the-month binge, you may want to check it out. (I'd get it myself if I didn't already have one...it's a dandy.)
