Found Rusty Old Knife/Picture
Probably an impossible shot in the dark.
I was metal detecting at mid 19th century historical home and in the back field found a pocket knife buried about 3-4 inches deep.
Its a single blade and measures just under 5" in length.
Not in good shape. The blade will not open. Have not done anything to it yet.
Checking to see if anyone might have an idea of what it is? Thanks.

Looks like maybe a trapper pattern? It's probably not possible to determine a maker. I'm guessing it is not as old as you are hoping. Probably well after the 1930s (and probably after 1950) would be my guess.

Try removing some of the rust with vinegar. Maybe you can get the blade open and see some kind of marking.

Neat to find something like that. Gets you to wondering about it's "story".

Very common pattern made by most knife companies.

Could be. Probably as good a guess as any.

That's what I was thinking, the Case 61048 but then they are only 4 1/8". Maybe there is 3/4" rust on the found knife.

My post was totally tongue-in-cheek.
I knew the knife was too long.

Re: Found Rusty Old Knife/Picture
Y'all are better at guestimating the length than me. From the angle of the picture v the pen for reference I can't judge how long it is!
I hope you can get it open flagcraig, but it looks from the picture to be a lost cause.

Re: Found Rusty Old Knife/Picture
Probably a lost cause but if the blades will move at all they will move if you squeeze the blades into the blade well to get them to move as opposed to trying to pull them out. Oil, squeeze, add oil, squeeze. Then pull them out. Good Luck!
