Nice hardware being shown and good stories! Still like my M88 in 308 WIN better than any other rifle I’ve owned; dropped three does with it last season. But, to change it up I’ve pulled out a Ruger M77 in 270 WIN my wife gave me first year we we’re married (1978) - just lapped the rings and put a Leupold VX3 on it for this season- hopefully pictures to follow in a future post. OH

That's a fat doe there Old Hunter and a good lever action Winchester! I've never shot one, are the triggers awful or just something to get used to?

I dunno about that 270W OH, I've heard those bullets just bounce offa deer.

Those early Ruger 77s with adjustable trigger are fine rifles and the .270W is a fine cartridge. Great combination. I used that for more than 40 years. Nowadays I use a Weatherby in .300WSM for long range hunting (mule deer and antelope), and my early Ruger 77 in .243W for whitetails. The old .270 never seems to get out of the safe.

Steve, the trigger on mine isn't bad; not terrific but certainly controllable by any decent rifleman. I've owned two others (another 308 WIN and a 284 WIN) - those other two triggers were about the same. This one is not very accurate with factory loads, but smokes (sub MOA) with one good handload using 165 Grain Hornady Interlocks and IMR4064. Cal, my old Ruger M77 was my only big game rifle at one time (early on in our marriage and working career) and it will do the job - I like to pull it out and hunt with it for memories sake every few seasons. I shot a mulie doe and field dressed her. Looking more closely, there was no bullet hole in that deer! But there was a nick over one eyebrow about a half inch long. The poor dear (deer) had been field-dressed while merely unconscious.

I never had a 10-22. They were always just a bit more expensive and it always seemed like either my parents or I could get better value from a Nylon 66 (back when you could get them!) or a Marlin.

In 1959 (I think) I traded an authentic Civil War brass powder flask (for cavalry revolvers?) to a doctor for an equally authentic Colt 1911. My father immediately took the pistol away from me and I ended up with a Winchester barreled action model 69 1930s .22 bolt action rifle. I bought a ten-shot clip and a replacement stock for it at the hardware store for (I think) about $17. I still have that little old rifle. They must have been so cheap back in the day that it does not have a serial number on it. Oh... I do have a bare bones 10-22. They are FUN.

Here's a shot of my 10/22 it's a 50th anniversary model that will print 1 inch groups at 50 yards all day if I do my part. It will go to my grandson this Christmas. That means Gramps will have to get another one

What would make a stock 10-22 shoot tighter groups besides trying different ammo? And what ammo does your gun like?

That's awesome! I have mine scoped in to shoot spent 12 Gauge cartridges at 100 yards. Wish I could figure out where I have a picture of it, I keep it up at the farm.

That rifle preferred CCI standard, I never tried the premium stuff. With a 16 inch barrel I figured an inch was pretty good.

These 10-22's are fine rifles ,they shoot well BUT I shoot a Marlin model 60 more consistently.

Change the 200 lb gorilla pulling the trigger...

You added the key word "stock" to your question - I suspect it is the same things you could do to any rifle: trigger job, barrel bedding, changing to a heavier barrel, better optics, etc, etc. Of course, after any of those things, the rifle is no longer "stock"!

Anyone here ever try their skill at Helice target shooting? I recently learned about it but haven't tried it. Seems it would be good practice for game birds like quail and dove which fly in very unpredictable paths. Looks like fun.
