Happy Canada Day

Just wanted to wish all of my Canadian friends and honourary Canadians everywhere a happy holiday. In honour of this fine day, this is my annual showing of a little 1907 regd Boker pen knife. The scales are sterling silver and display the shields of the nine provinces at the time in order of joining Dominion from left to right (middle photo).

Made in 1907 makes it a genuine antique now, doesn't it?

Thanks s-k, for the remembrance, and showing us that beautiful commemorative! Canada hasn't been a powerhouse of knife production in history, like England, Germany, Italy and the U.S, as well as others. However, there have been some companies; Grohmann's D.H.Russell belt knives are certainly famous, and wartime knives have been numerous from various companies. Case even had a foothold in Canada for a while.
I am proud of my adopted country for the foreign aid, and peacekeeping we have done over the years, and for the incredible commitment and sacrifices, esp. during WWII, where my father-in-law left his arm and his health.
Being a little "punchy", I thought I'd post this Canadian patent punch, from a made-for-Canada Premier, and a Hudson's Bay Harness Jack!

Thanks very much for the post Charlie. The Hudson Bay Harness Jack knife is a rare classic.

This is a WWI Canadian forces knife. Marked with the Canadian version of the government issue broad arrow and M & D for Militia and Defense. This one was made by Thomas Turner & Co of Sheffield.

S-K, here's the Case version of the Canadian Forces knife, I believe sailors and aircrew. It's stamped M.S.Ltd XX (Metal Stampings Limited), and was a post WWII knife:

Was curious if you could name the Nine Provences at that time.....I would bet that the last one is British Columbia......which ones are Ontario and Quebec?

Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Alberta.

Makes good sence to me the best Canadian knife I have ever seen is in Bedford, UK. nice old one SK.

Canadians have a lot to cut - both wood and game, so they really ought to be making a lot of knives too...

i went to a yard sale this last weekend...a herd of little blond girls began squeeling as i drove up? wth? so i get out of the car and suddenly have 5 little people herding me about the yard...??? finally, i am asking the lady how mauch for this, when she blurts out...."the girls think your santa...i told them you were on vacation, so you lost weight for the summer..."

so now the kids think santa is a snowbird....sheesh....

as i drove off i told them i would remember them at christmas...god, can 5 little people make a racket...

i guess i should shave...or find a job for christmas season?

Can't be true, afterall I'm a Laplander aka Finnish (also called Suomi) Afterall where did Hyvää Joulua! come from? First the Swedes try to claim the suana (we had 2 suana's growing up as every Finnish household has one, even though the sumer heat of Kelseyville, Ca, they were only useful in the winter) and now Norway tries to claim Christmas. No, shame in this world.

My Grandfather came from Finland in 1911, My Grandma came from Norway on my dad's side.

My dad just completed paperwork for Finnish citizenship, so he will likely have dual citizenship. It has something to do with passports being more liberal for travel in Europe or something like that.

BTW, Christmas last for 13 days in Finland, with the last day being Christmas Day!

Hukkanen, now that 75% (at least) mis-pronounced it, you know why I go by Hukk.

Yes indeed, I think my Grandma's maiden name was Duffa, not sure of the spelling. Odd that a Finn and a Norweigan should end up way out here in California since most went to northern USA. Odd that my Grandfather should end up as one of California's last mule skinners - muletrain driver. His father was a river boat captain in Finland - lot of water over there, I can see from the maps and of course Google Earth. I'd sure love to visit all Scandanavian countries some day.

No, it's not the easiest language to learn and very different from Norwegian!

The next weekend is actually a somewhat special occasion for Norwegians of Finnish descent – at least here in southern Norway.
I big area alongside the Norwegian-Swedish border is called Finnskogen (The Forrest of the Finns) because many Finnish immigrants settled there from the 1620ties. The immigrants brought with them knowledge, myths and customs still in existence today.

A tradition for this weekend is the informal announcement of the “Republikken Finnskogen” (The Republic of Finnskogen) in the presence of many guests including the Finnish ambassador.
