Family Members Birthyears as Case Collection idea.

Hello Fellow Case Fans,

I just started collecting knives this past March so I'm still a greenhorn. I like many different knife brands, especially Case, Queen, Schatt & Morgan, Canal Street and others, just to name a few. (I only own 2 Case knives. Zero Queens, Zero S&M, Zero Canal Street's) Anyways, now that I'm starting to understand how the Case dot system works, I got this bright idea that I would like to collect a set of 5 Case knives. One for the birth year of each family member.

They are as follows.:

1972-(8-dot)
1975(5-dot)
2001-(9-dot)
2003-(7-dot)
2007-(3-dot)

I was wondering where can I find info/pics for the Knives Case produced in each of these years? Can I find a list online, do I need to buy a "Case Collector's" book & if so which one would be best for this type of research. This bright idea will probably take me years to complet but where should I start? I'd appreciate any input or suggestions. Thanks!

Tom, you can probably do that pretty quickly if you have the funds.

I suggest picking out the patterns that you want and then try to find those patterns in those years. Many of Case's patterns have been made for decades and are still made today. A few have been discontinued but you stand a very good chance of finding what you want.

For example, if you like the 18 pattern you should be able to find one in any or all of those years. Pick a pattern or three and start hunting.

I would think you would want to collect a pattern that Case makes every year ( like
Mini Trapper (07) or small toothpick (096). You could collect them with similar handles
or get a variety of different handles for each individual. Others will soon come along
and easily provide you a longer list.

Tom, I concur with others who are coaching you about really nailing down what constitutes a "set" of knives. If "set" represents one example of every variation combination of pattern number, handle type, blade etch, etc., then you are looking to buy (conservatively) 500 hundred knives (100 per year x 5 years). Once you start looking at the years after 2000, then the variation combinations explode over what they were in the 1970's.

You can use this reference book to identify the patterns that are of interest and focus on those.

I was thinking more along the lines of 5 knives than 500. Don't think I can afford 500 although it would be nice. Maybe the word "set" takes it a little too far. Guess what I should say is a set of 5 knives. Thanks for the link! I'll check that out after work.

Lots of good input to think about. I think I'll pick out 5 patterns that I like, then starting with the oldest year (1972), try to buy 1 of those 5 patterns in that year. Then move on to 1975 and search for one of the 4 remaining patterns on my list and so on. Or, as one suggested, pick 1 pattern one look for 5 of that pattern but that sounds a bit harder. Dumb question maybe but does Case make knives with stag handels? Gotta run, time for work. Thanks again for all the input!

Case has probably made more knives with stag handle covers than any other manufacturer. However since the early 1970s high quality stag has become more difficult to get and more expensive so some years the number of knives made having stag handles has varied substantially. Some years there were none. So finding a full set of 5 knives, one for each of those years, would be difficult at best. Maybe even impossible if there were none made that year.

Hi rugmar,

I liked your ideas to this topic. Pattern #18 is one of my fav. So that one works for me.

But the Canoes may be even better. What I'm working on is a Set of 5 Knives that should symbolize my familie. When a familie is close then you could say "We're in this together." Or "We're all in the same boat." So I think Canoes are a great symbol for a familie.
I think I'll try heading in this direction and see how far I get. What I'll start looking for is as follows.:

"Father" Pattern #94 Big gunboat Canoe from 1972
"Mother" Pattern #131 (double end jack) Canoe from 1975
"Children" Pattern # 132 baby butterbean Canoe from 2001, 2003 & 2007

Gotta get ready for bed so I'll do some more research over the weekend to find out if those mentioned Patterns were made in the years I want them. Then, if my plan is ok, I have to sell the whole plan to my wife. Of course I won't buy them all at once. I'll start looking for the 72 & 75 first, once I get those 2, the rest should be easyier to find. Probably take me a year or maybe even 2 or 3 years to get all 5 knives together but it's something I can work on.

First family member found. This 1972 Sod-Buster Jr. that I recieved from treefarmer is the start of my "Case Family". I'm really stoked that my "Case Family" collection has gotten off to a good start! One down, four to go.

Tom, I did this a few years ago. Bought a 54 Case Trapper made in the year of their birth for my son and both of my grandsons. It may have been a waste of time and money though. I got the feeling they were not impressed. Don't know for sure though.

Those look awesome Jerry! I'm sure that it was not a waste Jerry! Sure wish I had a nice knife from my dad or grandfather! I'm sure they cheerish it and they will cheerish the heck out of it when your not around anymore but I hope that's a long, long, long ways off.
