Confusing terminology

Most of the names for the parts of knives originated in Britain around 1800, or earlier. Manufacturing knives in USA began around 1830 ? or 1850 ?, whatever the date it came after the establishment in Britain. I think some of the terms were applied incorrectly in USA but that was so long ago that these uses of the words is now seen as correct.

Seeing that reminded me of something I saw many years ago about an American questioning an Englishman about why he talked so funny and the gent replied:" Because WE invented the language!" or something to that effect.
I love their terminology for automobile parts;things such as a,"dynamo" or "boot" or,"wing" or ,"drop head" or,"trafficator" or,"overriders"

I found this diagram in another book I have that clearly answers this question. Note that on the upper right the part that is marked "handle (or scale)", and inside of that part is the "liner". This is from the 5th edition of "The Standard Knife Collectors Guide" By Roy Ritchie and Ron Stewart.

I always go with Handle covers. It’s got a nice ring to it

If you look at Jantz and the other knife suppliers the stuff handles are made of is indexed as handle material. I know this is funny, but I though handle material only becomes scales when it is actually put on the knife. As long as it is in the unfinished form it is handle material. Much like a fish would have an outer covering of scales so would a knife when it was finished?
