We have a new Golden Retriever, her name is Scout. After our Maddie died 3 weeks ago, our house and lives just seemed empty. Our vet put us in contact with someone trying to find a new home for Scout about a week later. She is a purebred Golden Retriever and exhibits all the traits. Very focused on toys and fetching. It’s nice to have a Golden again that likes to play. As you can see from the group shot our Kobi, another Golden, is getting old and only plays sitting down. He is almost 13.
Every morning when Scout sees me she starts this low growl or moan, it’s hard to describe, if you have had a Golden you have probably heard it. It’s a play growl that communicates take this toy from me but don’t take it, okay take it, no don’t take it, oh just love me and throw something. She gets excited easily and for some reason is obsessed with our outdoor cat. She is a lot of fun. She is a sloppy drinker and drips water everywhere after she drinks and then she burps like a human. Thinking about taking her and doing carnivals, see Scout the amazing burping dog. It’s good to have a backup plan for making a living.

Some good looking pets everyone. Never been a cat owner myself, and my wife is allergic to them. We do have some occasional feral barn cats, but they come and go, and you typically can’t get close to them. They’ll sit and watch you from a distance but if you approach them they scat! A while back I posted the story about putting out cat food daily for a momma barn cat (my wife felt sorry for her), only to find out from watching the game camera for several days that the only thing eating it was a big fat possum!

Mark, your description of Scout’s behavior hit home. My Labrador, Mazie does the same thing. She has a stuffed duck that she carries around the house. Like a child with a favorite toy, she even sleeps with it - one or both paws and/or her chin resting on it.

She will bring it to you and sit staring at you. “See my duck? It’s mine and you can’t have it, but would you please throw it for me? No you can’t hold it, but please please throw it.” She wants you to throw it, but she doesn’t want you to have it! When you try to take it from her so you can throw it, she quickly turns her head away at just the last second, so you can’t take it. All the time she’s wagging her tail. When you do get the duck from her she immediately sits in her “retrieve” position, as she was trained, watching to see in what direction it’s thrown. You throw it, she retrieves it and then this time when she brings it back she readily gives it to you. “Throw it again!” She will fetch it again and again, probably until your arm falls off.

When she first brings the duck to you, if you ignore her she will push you with her nose, with the duck in her mouth. “Hey, don’t you see me? Please throw the duck. No you can’t have it but please throw it!” If you continue to ignore her, she eventually will put it in your lap. “Okay, okay, you can have it, if you’ll please just throw it for me.”

Dogs are a lot of fun. Mazie often makes us laugh, which I’m sure is good for us.

You described both of my Golden’s to a tee. Scout will also test us by laying her ball down early and see if you will move over and pick it up and toss it. If you hold your ground she will eventually pick it up and put it on you or at your feet. She also does that duck away at the last second when she won’t let it go. We also see a stubborn streak in her just like our Kobi, you can just see it in the eyes that she is going to defy you and make you make her do something. They just get this looks on their faces that tells you they aren’t going to do what you say this time, with her it’s usually when she grabs something she isn’t suppose to have. They are a lot like kids, testing the limits and your resolve. And what joy they bring into our lives.

She looks like a sweetie. I’ve actually only met one Pittie that I was advised not to pet, and he was fostering with a rehabber friend. He did well with her. There rest were total sucks.

We have two new dogs. Got a 3 year old golden retriever named Scout back in July. Just picked up this brindle boxer mix from a shelter Friday. What a handful she is. She is totally untrained. No manners, no boundaries and a huge appetite. We have had to obstruct or weigh down lids because she will bully right into anything. She also doesn’t play fair. She bites Scout on the legs and grabs her hair on her neck. We have a lot of work ahead of us. She isn’t even house broken yet. But they have both stollen my heart. Oh, and her name is Bristol. She is 5 months old.
She has the most beautiful stripes. She looks like a piece of burl walnut. She can barely be seen when she sits in tall grass, such natural camouflage.
We struggled for the right name for her, were not going to keep the shelter name of “Bambi”. I wanted to name her Moki after my favorite brand of knives, but the boss said no. Bristol is a combination of Brindle and pistol because she is both.

Looks like you are forming a great gang there Mark. The lovely brindle pup looks as tho she will provide you with lots of fun and also a lot of work. Very good of you to have taken her from the shelter.

There a lovely pair! I do prefer decent sized dogs. Little ones are cute, of course, and usually smart, but the larger ones just seem right. I like a brindle coat too and retrievers are always beautiful.

For both Ed and Mark. Training a dog can be both fun and rewarding for both you and the dog. It’s great exercise too! A well trained dog is a joy but a poorly trained dog can be a continual problem.

Ed, the best time in a dog’s life to train them is the first year, because they learn things so quickly. They don’t have many bad habits yet either. You’re not far from one of the world’s premier dog trainers, if you should want some help. Robert Milner has a dog training facility and kennel between Memphis and Jackson (near Somerville, TN), and holds monthly “train the trainer” classes. http://www.duckhillkennels.com. Highly recommended. Even if you don’t need or want a gun dog, the obedience part of the training is fundamental and the foundation of everything else.

Thanks QS, Zoogirl and Ken. She is a heart stealer. My Golden Scout is too. I can’t think of a good caption for this photo. Something like “ it wasn’t me, it was one of the other dogs.”
The second photo is of Bristol asleep on my arm. She is so sweet.

These two girls have been earning their keep. They were both sitting in the 2nd bathroom recently, staring intently at the tub, a one piece tub/shower unit, and turning their heads and ears like they could hear something ( I could not ). So I opened the access door in an adjacent closet to get at the plumbing, and sure enough, evidence of RODENTS. Sophie and Annabelle could not get at them under the sealed tub unit, and the mice could not get into the rest of the house, so it was a standoff. I put traps under the tub baited with chunky peanut butter (no rodent can resist chunky peanut butter), and within a week or two the rodent body count was 5. Upon looking around under the tub with a flashlight and a mirror, I could see that the hole in the floor for the drain pipe was much bigger that it needed to be, and left room for a rodent to squeeze by. A can of expanding foam sealant fixed that.

Cheetah is now bigger than my wife. Very protective.
The rubber inflated ball found at the park only lasted .5 seconds after we brought it home. (What were we thinking?)
