Admiral Steel is cheaper than the catalogs by far and they have a wide selection. For other carbon steels Kelly Cupples has a list here. http://refractory.elliscustomknifeworks.com Look in the center row of buttons at the bottom for steel for knife making and Damascus.

For stock removal he has 1080 and 1084 it looks like, all the rest are for forging. $100.00 and up gets free shipping.

I'm sure there are others but these are what I have used.

EDIT: Ooops  Here is a link for Admiral http://www.admiralsteel.com I have 1095, O-1, A2, L-6, 1084, and some 5160. I ordered at seperate times with quantity so that they are from the same stock so that the heat treating charactoristics will be the same foor each.

Alpha knife has some steel and that's where I buy my titanium 6AL/4V alloy. http://www.alphaknifesupply.com

Thanks. I wouldn't have a clue as to how to make a knife, but my brother has all the tools and is wanting to give it a try.
