White Powder in Bone or Mamouth Ivory

I recently got a 2001 Case Select Pitch Black Copperlock................one side of the bone hade a great deal of white hard powdery residue....I scraped it out with a toothpick...and polished the bone with Renaissance wax...was suprized how well it cleared up...................................Does any one know what causes this......or if I really did a number on my knife by doing what I did................I had a similar instance with a 2008 Mamouth Ivory on the back side...should I clean that one too?

did you get them from the same source? where have they been stored? you should clean the powder off.

leftover buffing compound possibly? I know It's hard to keep it out of grooves in bone and whatnot.

I Agree ..Leftover compound that the previous owner didn't take the time to clean well. An old toothbrush seems to work.

The Mamouth Ivory knife was a brand new 2008 Case knife.......I would guess it came from the factory like that.

I agree 100% with darksev it is just buffing compound,While undesireable on a new knife it is not anything that will take away from the knife
