I wonder why Buck uses super-cheap and soft 420J2 versus the hard 8Cr13MOV most Chinese knives these days have? Or even RR's 440A?

Don't know what the steel is on this but it is cutting very well. Hope it retains its edge for a decent time.

That's a good question for the folks at Buck. As I said, I don't knowingly have any experience with 420J2. It's possible I have some knives made with that steel but if so I'm ignorant of it. I can understand cheap....but soft??? How soft is this material?cody6268 wrote:I wonder why Buck uses super-cheap and soft 420J2 versus the hard 8Cr13MOV most Chinese knives these days have? Today, besides my daily duo of Benchmade and SOG, I am carrying this Buck 703 (1992).

Re: WHAT ARE YOU CARRYIN RIGHT NOW? WHAT IS YOUR FAV EDC?
Thanks, my thoughts exactly. Been carrying it for days now. But it's hard to photograph the depth of the bone, you can see down in, it's partially transclucdent and way more colorful than these shots, it looks flat and dark. Nobody is making bones like these anymore, not even Case. I like this knife better than my Bose Collabs, better than any new Case I have, and most anything I have. Some of these oldies are rock solid, no wobble, super smooth action, great snap, doesn't feel like it will accidentally close. And less dough than a new GEC, Northwoods, Lion Steel, Benchmade, Spyderco.....sunknife wrote: Thank you Ivoryman.![]()
That 72' Case sure is pretty, the bone from that era has striking depth of color. I grabbed a 73' jack recently that has that same color, too hard to resist.
But enough of that. I keep going back to that Winchester you posted a couple pages back. Love the smooth bone, looks like GEC Smooth Autumn Gold, which is my favorite yellow ever. And bet if feels incredible. Who made that and wow I wish they would have made more in those bones.
DM11 thanks for showing that cattle knife again. Sweet.

Iman, even with the limitations of photos that is clearly an exceptionally beautiful knife.

AG Russell ultralight folder. VG 10 steel holds a great edge. Small, lightweight and useful for just about any job. I carry this one most often. When I don’t, I carry a Buck Prince (503 I think). Both are great.

I'm carrying a "yard work combo" today. I was going for a close up but the Chief of Security showed up and stuck his nose in to inspect the situation.
