Post by rigwelder »

its a PLATT & SONS, ANDOVER N.Y., I know its going to be somewhere from the early 1900s to around 1910, from other PLATTS, i have, or have had. but i cant find anything on this particular stamping. would it be a barehead pen knife? its 3 1/4 closed.

1864: Charles Platts emigrates from Sheffield, England to Connecticut, and the Platts name begins to appear on knives manufactured during his tenure.

1893: Charles Platts leaves Northfield Knife Company in Connecticut to become factory superintendent at Cattaraugus Cutlery Company.

1896: C. Platts leaves Cattaraugus to form his own company in Gowanda, N.Y. His sons later join him, expanding the business into, C. Platts & Sons Cutlery Company. A new facility is built Eldred, PA in 1897.

1900: Charles Platts succumbs and the company name is changed to C. Platts’ Sons Cutlery Company. Harvey Platts takes control of the company.

1905: Harvey purchases his brothers’ shares of C. Platts’ Sons, and sells the company’s assets to W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Co.

thanks, i pretty much know the history. what i was thinking was maybe the stamp was mainly used on their scissors. but i did find the stamp on a knife in the standard knife collectors guide vol. 4, but it doesnt mention any dates. i'm thinking it might be a line they used after the moved from eldred pa. and merged with case in 1905. since the latest date i see for platts is 1911,,,,,i'd guess it was made somewhere from 1905-1911??????
