Howdy folks,

I finally got up the courage to become a member after living in the shadows of your website the last few months. The knowledge of this group is overwhelming and entertaining as well, :). I have started to collect knives by way of woodcarving, and find it diffucult to purchase a knife and not sharpen it for use, as I now know can ruin the potential value of a knife. Thanks for the wonderful website. I look forward to my continuing knife education. :D

Hi Don.... ::welcome::

There may be knives that are " just for nice", as the Pa. Dutch saying goes, but they should be first and foremost tools, and capable of doing what they were designed for.

What better way to express pride in your carving, than to do it with tools you are proud of.

There are many on this site who take great pleasure in owning a well used and cared for knife. ::tu::

I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. Be sure to show us your carvings as well as your knives. ::nod::

Thanks so much for the welcome everyone. Also, I apologize in advance for being computer illiterate. I will post some pics of some of my knives as soon as my wife agrees to show me how...she is the "tech savy" person in our house. Although I can already forsee the "eye roll" when I tell her I joined this group :) .

Best to get her to buy you a KNIFE for your B-Day. ... :lol: Start out with asking for a FATHERS-DAY KNIFE. Take photos of the one you want and place it on the refrigerator door, bath-room mirror, steering wheel of her car, and even her pillow. I hope this works for you. 8)

I do a different kind of carving Don,scabbards for Japanese swords.Nonetheless i have collected a good assortment of tools,both Japanese and American and plan on going in a different direction soon,just bought my first magazeen on chip carving last week and when i saw your pics of your sharpening set up and carvings in the background i said to myself strange coindidence.I kinda found a new home on this forum,interesting and friendly.So welcome Carvin

Thanks for the welcome Greg,

You actually do artwork! I wish I could relief carve, and try my hand at Gunstocks. I pretty much carve caricatures exclusively, simply because they are humorous and forgiving...if you carve a nose or a foot too big, so what! It's an exaggeration of realism! :mrgreen: Don't get me wrong, in the hands of true professional caricature carvers, it is truly an artform!

Have you ever heard of Wayne Barton? World class chip carver, he has a few books and DVD's available. I plan to try my hand at chip carving myself. Glad to hear from ya' :D

Awesome start! ...I am slowly but surely gettin' more. :)

BY the way, Go Big Orange! I love your neck of the woods, my wife and I and our dogs head for the smokies about twice a year. I Love it down there!!! I also listen to WDVX when I can, particulalry "Tennessee Saturday Night." I really like that Bluegrass Sound! Gimme that 'High Lonesome' tenor ::ds:: ::ds:: ::ds::
