Yes, it's on my list of things not done YET! I have been thinking of making some, but the cost of steel has soared, as has Aluminum for the center pirce. It is far cheaper if I make one in 3 pieces. They may run as high as $275 each, maybe that's why they stopped making them, cost prohibitive. I think Jantz owns the rights when they bought Koval. They are not hard to make, I have access to the equipment, but the cost of raw materials is ridiculous. I have drawn one up that will be half as much cost wise. The raw materials alone cost more than a decent 4 x 36.

Re: Shops, tools, materials and tips
I just had to share with my buddies at AAPK........................
My wife & I are away for the weekend visiting grand kids in Seattle.
Just before we left I was running an errand & was driving home so we could leave for Seattle. I was 3 blocks from home & saw a yard sale with a metal band saw at the sale. I stopped and asked the guy if it worked......he said it worked. I asked how much...............$20.
I almost ripped my pants off getting to my wallet!
So I now have a metal band saw in my newly remodeled show. And, yes...............IT WORKS GREAT!!!!!!
I will post some pics of the (old but very functional) metal band saw and some of pics of my shop remodel when I get home next week.

I'll triple you're money right now Dale. I have been searching for one for a while to cut 1/4" brass and aluminum plate stock.

Kaleb,
If you were closer I would let you come over use it.
It is an old one with a cast iron frame.
The sucker is heavy! It must weight close to 200 lbs.
It would cost more to ship it than it would to buy a new cheap one from Farbor Freight.

Re: Shops, tools, materials and tips
You got a BARGAIN Dale! I have one from Harbor Freight, the Red one for about $170.00 and while I have heard a lot of complaints about tracking I have never had any problem except repacing the belt once and I keep a spare, it's an easy size to get. I've used it for hours and I've worn out several Starret Bi-Metal blades cutting everything from titanium alloy (rough) to mammoth tooth (new blade only) to tool steel to stainless and carbon steels. It's not very heavy but it has been a rugged performer. I need to take pictures of my little Inland 37.7 inch Rock bandsaw. It is available with diamond blades, wood cutting, and metal cutting. It also has a variable speed control so it will cut all these materials.
Congratulations on your new saw!

Re: Shops, tools, materials and tips
Anyone who wants a good inexpensive bandsaw and wants to enjoy the adventure of making one can go to;
Kits for building woodworking tools. This company is still around and supplying parts. Here is their contact information, current as of September 2002 (they do not have a web site): Gilliom Manufacturing Inc. 500 Boonslick Rd. St. Charles, MO (636)724-1812
I did and made this one several years ago. I regularly cut 1/4 in brass and 1/16 nickle silver using a metal cutting blade from Sears.

Re: Shops, tools, materials and tips
Orvet, your ceiling rack brings back fond memories.
Dad and I used to park our sailing dingy with rigging in a garage ceiling rack with the car parked underneath. We kids also hung our bicycles up there.
However, without unlimited space, the garage is now a two bedroom appartment, the boat is sold, and the car sleeps under the stars.
My Dad's use of space was ALMOST as economical as you.
Question is: can you lie in bed and direct someone else to exactly the right place to find a particular item?

No, because I am forget where I put things when I rearranged everything!Edgewise wrote: Question is: can you lie in bed and direct someone else to exactly the right place to find a particular item?
I have added more storage since then & have gotten rid if a bunch of stuff.
It helps cut down on the clutter, but I have had to label boxes & bins because I moved so much stuff around I am still learning where I put some things.

Re: Shops, tools, materials and tips
I think this is a really good topic. I think that just about anybody can pick up an idea or two from it.
We need more pictures of work shops or just work areas. We all don't have 40'x60' shops. Some of us may use an old dresser or desk in the spare bedroom. I have seen some amazing work come from small work areas.
Hukk, orvet, Kaleb, all you guys that have posted pics, here, before, post some more. I know you have changed SOMETHING around in your shop.
Who knows, it might just be the inspiration somebody needs to become the next Tony Bose(well, maybe not).

OK Bill,
But I will have to take some new pics.
BTW,
If you have been reading this thread you know that I really like my Jet 1 HP Buffer.
I bought it in March this year, just before the OKCA Show in April. About 2 weeks later the capacitor that starts it went out. Jet replaced it; down time, about 10 days (10 of my busiest days).
Christmas is coming and I have a bunch of orders on my bench. I went out to the shop Saturday evening to do some buffing on a couple that are nearly done. I flipped the switch; the buffer jerked & quit. The capacitor is out again. Called my local dealer this morning, they have a new one on the way. ETA? Approx 10 days, l again at the busiest time.
I must say that when it works it is fantastic. When it quits is always when I am busiest!
At least their warranty is good. My luck it will go out again right after the warranty is expired.

I love looking at all the shops. when i moved in to my new old house it had a nice big shop in the back. Peg board all over. Now it's full. I clean it and straighten it up every six months whether it needs or not. thanks for looking.
