Tang Stamp Error - Amerikan

Post by BladePirate »

Hello,

So I was going through some of my smaller Stag knives and came across this pinned Stag with a tang stamp of Sabre Solingen 124 and noticed a misspelled stamp on the obverse of Amerikan Knife Co.

This is the first time I have ever come across a tang stamp error and was curious if others have as well? Pics are attached.

That is the German spelling and after all the knife was made in Germany. It is not an error. By the way, pocket knives have "tangs", fixed blade knives have "ricassos".

Thanks for your reply but I seriously doubt your conclusion as none of my other American Knife Co. GERMAN knives are spelled Amerikan nor have I ever seen one; oh and by the way, Ricasso is a location that contains the tang stamp - how often do you hear someone refer to the "Ricasso Stamp"?

I don't think it is an error. Several of these come up with a Google search also some on Ebay. This is only one of many.

Seriously? I literally get zero google hits with American spelled with a K versus a C....you do realize I'm not referring to the actual name of the American Knife Co. but rather AMERIKAN? Thanks.

Really?? You now know you were mistaken regarding the stamp, could have taken my word for it, I have seen many of them. Ricasso is the area on a fixed blade between the guard and the blade and it is NOT called a tang stamp on fixed blades except maybe by tyros as yourself.

When you search for this instead of searching for Amerikan Knife search for "Amerikan" knife with quotation marks around it. Because Google and Ebay are way smarter than us they want to change it to their correct spelling. Using quotation marks lets you search as entered. Hope this helps btw I learned the hard way myself.

You are correct, I was mistaken - Tyro? Seriously? Please, share what "you" call the makers mark stamped on the Ricasso? Referring to it as a Tang Stamp seems to really get your knickers in a bunch!

Thank you VERY much for that tip as I believe you have just helped me become more successful in Google searching! Thank you.

Never really thought much about the difference between a tang and ricasso, but apparently there is debate on the subject. In this knife dictionary by Blade Reviews.com they show a picture of a ricasso on a folding Buck 505 knife in the area I consider the tang and where the tang stamp is. Scroll down on this page and you can see it. Not a big deal - just interesting.

"tyro"

In all my years on God's green earth, I had never run across that word. Now admittedly, I'm no wordsmith but I feel I have a fairly decent vocabulary. At first glance it looked like a derogatory term some one would use when name calling, so off to Google I go. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it is a very benign word meaning "a beginner or novice". Who'da thunk it?

There are some business people who will order a run of knives and have them marked with a known brand name, the rights to which are still under ownership. To avoid prosecution the spelling of the brand name is slightly altered such that the pronunciation remains the same.

Tyro is a word you often see in crossword puzzles, kind of like ort. I have even heard Judge Judy use the word tyro before. Can't say I've heard people use the words much in everyday conversation.

Thank you for saving me the Google search, in the haste of getting my four kids up and ready for school I hadn't gotten that far yet. Interesting word and I too have never heard of it - I did assume it was not a good thing and happy to hear it isn't! Have a great day and thank you in your efforts of Tyro Tutelage!1

Pirate, although I don’t believe your “Amerikan” knife is a factory error, to answer your OP question factory errors are not all that rare. Except for a very few rare cases they don’t add any value to the knife, but they’re sometimes interesting conversation pieces. For more about factory errors just do a search here for “factory error”. (Search function is located under Quick Links, upper left of this page.) You’ll find several pages of posts with various factory error examples. ::tu::

Yeah, same here - truth be told a majority of folks seem to be just fine with referring to a tang stamp as a tang stamp regardless whether it's fixed blade or folder; to specify "tang stamp on the Ricasso reads" versus "tang stamp reads" seems appears to be more like "tomayto, tomahto"

Thank you Ken, good info of which I'm getting plenty this morn :-) - funny, I've owned this blade for 15+ years and never noticed the spelling until looking for a knife to equip my 8th grade son with and landed on this one, hence the question. I didn't know if tang stamp errors were in the same collector niche as coins and as one member put it, purposeful variations of a company name to avoid litigation appears to be somewhat common.

I suppose that after all this the All About Pocket Knives site but since I am primarily a fixed blade collector I sometimes see fit to try to educate folding knife guys proper terminology. Thank god you live in a place where an 8th grader can walk around with a belt knife on his belt!! Too many kids these days never get the chance to enjoy carrying a knife.

Well said and received and thank you for sharing your knowledge! Yes, I am blessed with living in Oregon which has become the Knife Capital of the US AND has pretty reasonable knife laws on the books. My first folder and fixed blade were Old Timers given to me by my grandad - the folder was a Gunstock lockblade194OT and the fixed blade was a Sharpfinger Skinner 152OT and still have both. Both my boys have a good start on collections of both folders and fixed, my two younger daughters have informed me they want me to find purple and pink handled knives so as not be left out, their request made me smile pretty big!

I think KA-BAR has some pink folding knives. I live in lower NY state and am 71. When I was young we would always have pocket knives in our pockets everywhere, school, church anywhere. We'd walk down the road three abreast carrying .22s or .410s to go shoot rats at the dump, and usually carried fixed blades in the woods. Those days are long gone around here, it isn't legal to even discharge a firearm anymore. Kids can't take even the smallest pen knife to school. I am glad I grew up in America when I did!! I hear the Girl Scouts no longer have official knives and when I went to buy an official Cub Scout knife for a nephew several years ago it was made in CHINA!! I had to give him a vintage Camillus Cub knife.
