Found old folding knife, looks to be revolutionary war era

Post by anderbri »

I found an old folding knife at my grandparents place and since they have both passed no one knows where it came from and how old it is, can anyone help me figure it out? I did some searching on Google and the style of knife i found looks similar to the revolutionary war era knives. The other item that was with the knife was an old leather and brass flask for gun powder. See pics

The flask is not a powder flask it was used to hold shot for shotguns and is likely mid 1800s. Knife looks foreign but I don't know the age.

The knife looks like an Italian boot figural (Stivale) knife. ACCORDING TO Levine's Guide they were made much the same from the 18th through the 20th century so dating it would be tough. Hope this helps. ____Dave

I concur with what Dave says above. Could also have been made in Spain, Greece, or a Middle Eastern country. Same style has been made for maybe even 200 years right up to recently, so i don't think it can be dated.
Welcome to AAPK.
Don't be too disappointed. Dating is difficult with many knives.

I would agree with gunsil, it is a shot bag not a powder flask. I have owned a few and they are of the black powder era.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
