Western - 531

I've always liked this nice looking and dependable knife.
I just got this one.

A sizable, hefty knife.

I like a bigger, heavy knife for pocket carry, and this fits the bill.
To me, it has that old Cargill look, like it should have a 3 legged buffalo shield on it..
Look at some of Bob's early patterns app. same size Joe and see what ya think.
Love the drop point pattern as well...

Shrink it down by about half an inch and she'd be right in my "like" size.

I have S-533 which is the same knife with a clip blade instead of a drop point. I bought it in the sports store in Grande Prairie, Alberta in 1979. My son had just been born so i bought myself a knife to celebrate.

Those Western knives in that pattern are really well built knives and were relatively expensive when they were first produced. The O.P.'s knife is a first generation model due to the A stamp on the blade and the etch which was changed to a scene on subsequent models. They also came in a couple different sizes. Here are mine.

Ray, your S-533 is also "B" so same year as mine, but the etch is different: mine is "WESTERN" with the "T" being a short sword; yours looks to have an angling etch with jumping fish ?
Odd that not all made in same year got the same etch ?
I had always thought that different etches on these = different years of production.

Roland:I think it may have been a running transition whereby some of the earlier production got the original etch(like yours)and then they switched over to the animal scenes.They also changed the shape of the handles somewhere along the line. Note the difference between the model 521-C and the 521-F. Whatever the case they are really great knives.

Can't imagine making the change, but there you go.

Its Bob Cargill who started Cripple Creek knives..look at the lines in his older pattern
knives bout the same size of folders as yours... reminded me of them, its look that is.

Thanks Will, I did look at the Cargill knives. There sure are some similarities.
That Cargill pattern is quite nice. Couldn't stop looking at it.
