Need some advise with 2 knife,s

Post by bender9876 »

Hello all. New to AAPK and need some help. I have been given 2 pocket knifes from Uncle,s estate from my Aunt. And have no need for them so tried to sell on ebay and ad was pulled as they had either pictures of KKK on the handle or writing on blades. In 2 days time the 2 combined had bids over $200 then ad was puled because they have policy of offensive items.

I knew this when listing but I put KKK in search line on ebay and all kinds of items came up so I thought they were ok to sell there. I was wrong. I want to assure all that I dont support or condone hate groups. But kinda hard to think these are any worse than other items for sale on ebay? Anyways not here to argue or complain. Just want some help on where to sell them? Here? I can post pictures (I think) if interested.

I have sold on ebay for years & 1st time this has ever came up. But Im a coin guy. My ebay ID is bender98762012 and Im 100% for feedback.

Please advise. Thankyou in advance, Jim

I have seen hundreds of "KKK" knives and none of them were real. They are "fantasy" knives since none were ever made in the heydays of the Klan. If you post photos it would be easier to tell what you have.

Jim Parker used to have boxes and boxes, probably totally hundreds of knives, on his table at knife shows, that contained Barlow type two blade "KKK" knives, that were made by a German cutlery for him. I think Kaufman was the maker.

Sounds like you’ve discovered the idiocy that is often seen on eBay. Try listing without putting KKK in the description or the header, so the eBay keyword search won’t sniff you out. Let your pictures do the talking. Personally I wouldn’t give you one dollar for them but there are apparently some who would, and might use them for nefarious purposes, which is why my recommendation is to destroy them. But they’re your knives, so that’s not my decision to make.

BTW you cannot sell here on AAPK unless you buy a premium membership or open a store, which collects a percentage of your sales. Directions for posting pictures here can be found in the “AAPK Tips & Tricks” sub-forum viewforum.php?f=98.

When I was a boy and a teenager the KKKlan was still active in parts of eastern NC. As I recall they were a "secret" organization so I doubt they would have knives, hats, t-shirts, or pencils with their logo, name, etc. Mostly stuff to sell to kids or wanna-be's. Kind of like all the NAZI stuff you see for sell at some flea markets. I'd follow Ken's advice and relist it without mentioning the KKK and sell it to someone that wants it. I doubt it could be used for anything more nefarious than any other pocketknife could be used for. OH

I used to have an application for membership to the KKK.

It was given to my grandfather when he worked for Gulf Oil back in the 20’s and 30’s.

He never filled it out, nor did he ever join.

It was an interesting read and essentially required one to agree that death might befall any member that revealed any secret information about them.

I have no idea what happened to it. I haven’t seen it years. Not sure it was ever removed from my parent’s home to mine. It didn’t show up when we liquidated their home after Mom died in 1988.

I also remember a large circular sign, made from a saw blade, that stood out on US -11 coming into Birmingham, declaring that the KKK ruled here. Had the white hooded figure on a rearing horse with flaming torch logo and all. Not a cheap sign, professionally done. That was in the 50’s and 60’s. I have no idea when it was erected, but I thought seriously about removing/stealing it at the time. I went so far as to examine that possibility up close and personal. The 3/8” x 3’ saw blade was welded it’s entire diameter to a large 6” iron pipe and taking it would have required a great effort, not to mention the danger of getting discovered in the attempt.

It disappeared sometime after 1963.

Birmingham is now one of the most integrated cities in America.

Wabash Cutlery made knives showing a robed clansman on the handles. The handles had a picture with clear celluloid over the picture. Wabash was in business from 1921 to 1935.
I have had 2 of these. I would show a picture, but I had both rehandled in jigged bone.

I had two KKK knives;one was of German make(can't remember who)that I gave to my brother about 30 years ago.The name of the Grand Poobah or whatever they called him was engraved into the master blade(stockman) and it had white celluloid handles that may have been starting to degrade.
The other was given to me by a friend of my son who got it when he was cleaning out a storage unit. It is a Case trapper with black handles and color engraved blades in what looks like an authentic Case box with a serial # of 336. Someone said they may have been made for SMKW. I don't display it and really have no interest in the Klan but it is an unusual enough piece that I hung onto it.

I agree w/ Ken. Destroy them. No need to keep something tied to racism or to profit from it.

I would take issue with this solution;not because I support the KKK or what it stood for but rather as an example of our past history. By following that train of logic, then I suppose it would be prudent to destroy a prime example of an SA dagger because it glorified the Nazi regime and contains a swastika. This is the type of logic that supports people wanting to confiscate and destroy all guns because some choose to use them for illegitimate purposes. Sorry but I don't buy into that theory. Just my opinion folks.

Ray if it was a legitimate historical relic from the KKK I would agree with you, especially if put in the proper context of history. I’m certainly no fan at all of the current fad of removing old statues and memorials to those who lost their lives in the Civil War, for example. And I’m not in favor of destroying authentic Nazi relics either.

I see these knives as a lot different. They are not authentic, but instead were of late 20th century manufacture by persons trying to make a quick buck, or scam someone into thinking they were authentic. As Bruce said, sold to kids or wanna-be’s (which is where IMHO the nefarious part comes in). I see that in a completely different light. JMO
