Show us your grossest eBay knife
I think this is my last single purchase knife from eBay, this knife has such an appearance to me of cobbled togetherness now that I have it in hand and it just pisses me off that stuff like this is being sold. I put a generous max bid early on in the bidding and turns out I won for just under a few days later. I dont think Schrade Cut used drawn swedges and i don't think they cut their swedges down to the ricasso. The grinds are all washed out, theres a tapered brass spacer shim put in, there are gaps. Shame on me from the pictures, the bone looked good the stamp looked good, the lighting wasnt amazing. I haven't handled dozens of Cut Co era knives but this knife just doesn't seem like it left the factory this way.

We can close this thread lol if it's alright with everyone, I was pretty ticked off I've since cooled down. Seems foolish now in hindsight.

That knife doesn't look fake if that's what you're thinking. Is it a single spring two bladed knife? Can you show more pictures of it?

Re: Show us your grossest eBay knife
Ive seen a similar knife on Smokey mountain knife works to know it has some legitimate features that I've called into question for example the full length cut swedge on the main blade pile side. I will use the knife rather than putting it away. The main blade has certainly been buffed into oblivion, the grind is way washed out into what was a pronounced cut swedge.KnifeSlinger#81 wrote:That knife doesn't look fake if that's what you're thinking. To me the posted knife looks ok. I would have to see more photos but the blade looks ok to me.
I have older Schrades in that pattern but none handy - my Schrade collection is in my safe deposit box.

Re: Show us your grossest eBay knife
Without a doubt it has ben squirreled with, but I think it's original parts. That is if it's the same knife I saw on ebay that I think it is. The long swedge on the back is not quite factory, and the mark side swedge has been messed with and the blades ground on, that is certain. Schrade cut had long swedges that nearly went to the tang on some blades, it could have had that near full length swedge originally and for a two blade single spring knife that is plausible so it would have more blade clearance. If it has a second blade on the other end of the spring the extra brass is for spacing, and is very likely original.Pile Driver wrote:Ive seen a similar knife on Smokey mountain knife works to know it has some legitimate features that I've called into question for example the full length cut swedge on the main blade pile side. Edit to add: I was looking at my schrade cut cattle knives tonight and they both have a full length swedge all the way to the tang on the back side of the pen blade. Both of these knives are in original condition, used but not monkeyed with.

Don't be embarrassed. I think you did fine buying the knife and your concerns about it were warranted. We have all been there.Pile Driver wrote:I'll live with it, gonna carry it its solid; at least it doesn't rattle anyway

One time I put a REALLY high max bid on a old schrade I thought was minty. Well the photos were bad, it was nowhere near the condition I thought. I should have noticed it but was being foolish hoping for the best. Thankfully the bidding did not get near my max bid or I really would have kicked myself, but it was more than I would have paid had I known the condition it was really in. I don't have that knife anymore. I think I about broke even on it, but I learned something...that time.

Re: Show us your grossest eBay knife
I’ll try to help make you feel better PD. Here’s one of my follies.
One evening while browsing the bay on my phone I saw a knife that appeared to be a Case Tested whittler (one of my weaknesses) with MOP handles. There was just a few seconds left in the auction and the bid was low. So I jumped in with a bid and to my surprise I won.
Then I took a good look at the pictures and realized I had just bought a piece of rehandled, buffed-to-death junk. I had let my spur of the moment excitement outrun my knowledge and judgement. Fortunately it didn’t cost me much, as apparently other watchers had seen what I should have, and didn’t bid. I knew better but I did it anyway. When I received the knife, to add insult to injury I found that what I couldn’t see from the seller’s pictures was, the rehandle was done with gold-lip pearl, which Case never used.
May be a legitimate but ruined 83109.

My worst, but most educational, early eBay monstrosity - a "fantasy Catt" which likely never saw the inside of the Cattaraugus factory save the master blade.
I know better now...
