Nice find there. I've seem to become attracted to the slenderino blades, have to add 98ot to my list now.

That's a good word to describe Mike's new knife, "slenderino"! Thanks for expanding my vocabulary, Rotten. Mike it's great find. ::tu::

Now i'm jealous because Mike has two 98OT's. If you have never had one they seem like the perfect small EDC, so comfy in hand. A bit like the 'perfection' of the Camillus 72 pattern, the 98 is a bit smaller but so 'perfect' in design. Made from 1982 to 1997 so were other boxes involved ? or just the 2 Mike has ?

I think those may be the only two boxes. I'm not sure when they started using the blue box that schrade had printed in china.

I think the 856 and predecessors also fall into the perfect small edc category. At 3 3/8" it's my favorite choice over the 98OT and 72 & clones though all are great patterns. The aesthetic of an equal end cattle knife is what makes me like them so much over other similar size knives.

Paul, the 856 stopped when Schrade-Walden stopped, correct ? I cannot recall seeing an open stock Schrade 856. And actually it is not often seen at all. Too bad because then we cannot all carry one. I think i sold the 2 i once had.

They did not survive the transition to swinden. It was last shown in the 1961 catalog.

The schrade jr cattles are my favorite of the pattern but they are not the only option. I have various brands and they all share the same traits as being the ideal small and size efficient knife. If an old knife is not readily available case currently makes the 63090 which is an excellent take on the pattern. I have one that I am very pleased with. I would encourage anybody to try any brand of a quality jr cattle knife. The camillus 75 is also a good one.

I love to see them knives and especially the schrade..I'm kinda stuck on the way the bone is jigged, they lock up nice and tight, and have excellent weight..I recently looked at a GEC whittler that had the same style bolsters and similar jigging..I may have to try out one of those very soon..~Jon

Just got this 46 Whaler in desert ironwood. What a great looking knife. I have taken to wooden handles lately. Never thought I would say that, but I am finding that there are some real fine woods out there that make some great looking knives.

In my abstinence of ebay it seems I have missed a lot. Nice knives, very good find on the barlow.

The 2 3/4" ones are a nice little pattern. I have a ton of them, two and three blade ones with the black synthetic handles, my favorite are of course the stockmans.
