Case xx medium abalone mother of pearl toothpick

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case xx medium abalone mother of pearl toothpick

Post by joesskankshack »

Hello! Can anyone help me identify the type of handle is on the knife? I am looking to selling it and don't really know anything about it aside from it being a 2002 Case XX medium toothpick (mother of pearl and abalone). Thank you

Take a photo of the back of blade with pattern # that will tell if it has been rehandled

That’s an aftermarket rehandle job. Looks like probably pearl and idontknowwhat. ::shrug:: (Probably abalone). The knife left the Case factory with bone handles.

Do you know if the rehandles have any value?

Yes they do. See this recent discussion of abalone re-handled Case knives.

Folks who don't fully appreciate what they are will often overpay for them (at least I think they overpay).

Obviously some folks think the rehandles have more value than the original factory handles, else they wouldn’t put those handles on them. A lot of it depends on the kind of collector you are. Some prefer everything original and authentic, some like things unique and glitzy. To sell a knife like yours you need to appeal to the latter.

Thank you, that really helps. I have a few rehandles, which clarifies a lot, especially since I had not idea replacing the handle was even a thing. I inherited many case knives and it has been a learning process.
