Anyone use these Case Arkansas Stones?

Any opinion on these 2 Arkansas Stones with small bottle of canola oil for use
in sharpening pocket knives?

I do not have the Case stone kit. I do however use Arkansas stones to sharpen my knives. I love them. I say give them a whirl.

If you don’t want the mess of the oil, may I suggest regular old water with some Dawn dish soap just a few drops in a 4 oz container of water . It works fantastically and just wipe dry when done.

I have the Case Oil and the Case Stone (a couple of the stones in different sizes). They work just fine for honing an edge on a knife - just like my other brand stones do. Always been my contention that the stone don't know what brand it is (just like a cow don't know what brand milk they give). Any decent stone will hone an edge. OH

This is so true ..... Case -- Schmace ...... Who cares about a brand name, it will only increase the price. It's the stone that matters and you have a good one.
That one is great for small blades but larger blades require a larger stone. In various grits. With water.
Flea markets are awash with them.

I have a couple of Arkansas stones from Case and a couple of Smith’s that I picked up in Hot Springs several years ago. I can’t tell any difference. The ”Case” stones may have even been produced for them on contract by Smith’s - I’ve seen some where the packaging looks identical except for the names. There’s a Camillus one for sale on eBay now. Haven’t tried the oil. I have a bottle of it though. Somewhere. As for the stones, they work great.

Use it. It’ll work and work better than most wonder sharpeners folks buy. And I agree with the other guys about water instead of oil. Far less messy. Works just as well if not better.

A soft arkansas produces a relatively fine finish and you can get quite sharp with them. They work well for most sharpening but for a very dull and or chipped edge or reshaping of an edge they will take a lot of time since they are not very coarse.

Over the years on this and other knife forums I've saw lots of threads where the OP is questioning quality of stones as well as systems etc. I don't think I've ever owned a Case branded tone but I'm sure they are fine. I agree with knifeswinger#81 depends on the condition of the blade as to what stone to use. I have a course and medium diamond stones needed for some of those flea market finds you come across but for most of my knives I use a Smith brand Arkansas Stone and or a strop. As far as your Case stones they should do fine for putting a razor edge on a knife unless it requires a significant amount of metal removed. Truth is the secret to sharpening freehand is angle and pressure and to get that right it just takes a lot of practice. When I decided to get serious about sharpening I bought all the old kitchen knives I could find and sharpened everyday for a long time Then magically one day the elusive burr I had heard of popped up on a Schrade 18OT I was ecstatic and knocked down and went on to learning how to use a strop
Just a side note I have a habit of sharpening my carry for the day on the bottom of a coffee mug and strop it on my pant leg. I've also sharpened many knives while camping on a stone I picked up off of the ground. So If this works as many of us old codgers know it does those Case stones should serve you well.

I have used Arkansas stones since the early 60's and wouldn't be without them. As far as Case stones, that is just a name probably made by Smith. I believe they are all quarried in Arkansas. I use mineral oil but the idea of lube is to keep the iron filings out of the stone, so water with dawn, will work too. Main thing is to keep it clean. I used to store my stones in a quart jar with kerosene but don't anymore, Kerosene has gotten high priced. Terry

Very true. A lot of old pocket knives here about were touched up on a rock somebody picked up out of the plowed ground in the tobacco patch. Things sure have changed in my life time.

I have to laugh at the advertisements for "certified black angus" beef. So Herefords aren't any good anymore?
