A Special Knife in Memory of a Special Friend
Back in November my good dog Acorn left me after a brief battle with cancer. She had been with me for thirteen and a half years....good times and hard times with her tail always wagging. Herman Williams made this knife for me to honor her memory. I hope that some day I can be as good a man as she thought I was.
I have a hard time trusting someone who doesn't like dogs...but if my dog doesn't like someone, I'll trust that.

Doug I'm very sorry for your loss. Dogs really do become family. I think you've found a wonderful way to memorialize you beloved friend.

What a great tribute to Acorn. I'm sure she would like it. I know what it's like to lose a Dog, it's extremely difficult. She most certainly keeps watch over you from Heaven. Keep the faith Brother.

Great post, Doug! Those mosaic pins are krazy kool (and on a 165, too!). I know just how you felt when you lost your Friend. I will be facing that one of these days as well. Stay warm; Spring is coming. The flower buds on my silver maple are swollen. Snow tonight.

Re: A Special Knife in Memory of a Special Friend
I want to thank everyone for their kind words. Somebody told me once that God gave dogs a shorter life than our's in order to teach us love and grief.
I also want to thank Herman who went to a lot of trouble making this knife. I wanted the paw prints headed toward the guard on the mark side and the other direction on the pile side. I didn't want Acorn to fall off. He recessed the 3 pins holding the handle on, and then put small slices of the mosaic pin on top of each one. On the 2 prints on the outside edges he used an end mill and did the same. He also included 2 special serial numbers that aren't visible in the pictures. After all that work, he gifted the knife to me. Not long ago, I went to the dog rescue center and adopted an abused dog. She is my 3rd female brindle pit mix to carry the name "Acorn". I figure when I get to Heaven, I'll only have to holler Acorn once and they'll all come running.

What a fitting tribute to your pup. Glad you were able to get another one to help to fill that void.

Sorry for your loss and very happy that you’ve given your new pup a great home.
It occurs to me that the blade on that most awesome knife looks rather like brindle. Is that intentional? My first thought was that the knife looked like water.
I do like the look of brindle Pitties. They are both beautiful ladies.

Ann, It is what Herman calls machine turning...the resemblance to brindle hadn't occured to me. Thanks for your kind words.

Sorry for the loss of Acorn ... I had read the same about why our best buddies only live short lives... the unconditional love of a dog and their ability to sense our moods is incredible...
The knife is a great beautiful tribute and now a keepsake for sure!!

Great story Doug! Sorry for the loss of your dog. I understand.
I just lost my Josi due cancer a few days before last Christmas. It's not an easy thing, she was born right in my house and she never lived anywhere else in her life.
I like your commemorative knife idea.
And kudos to Herman!

Great knife to honor a fittingly great dog. I sometimes feel sorry for non-dog people that never get to experience all the joys that accompany the privilege of having a truly great dog ...
pffffft that's not a knife ......... now THAT'S a knife !! Crocodile Dundee

Re: A Special Knife in Memory of a Special Friend
Once again I would like to thank everyone for their kind words. As a renter, I didn't have a place to bury Acorn so she was cremated. Every time I looked at that box containing her remains it made my heart ache. I've mounted the knife in a display case over my desk and now when I glance up at it I remember all the great times we had together...although those memories still bring a tear to my eye now and then. Having a truly great dog is indeed a privileged.
