NCCA Marlboro Knife Show - March 3, 2019

I made it to the Northeast Cutlery Collectors Association show in Marlboro, MA yesterday and brought home these four.

The budding knife is a Henckels bought from Steve Pfeiffer. He had a roll of about 20 budding knives of various designs (maybe he'll show a photo of that roll of beauties.)

Next is an ivory English knife marked "HILL & SON / HAYMARKET" (1875 - 1900).

3rd a "T. ELLIN & CO. / SHEFFIELD" with the VULCAN stamp (not ivory). I don't think this one is real old (the company was around from the 1790s - 1970s... heck of a run).

A metal-handled knife probably from the 1960s marked "GELBROS CO. / GERMANY" (abbreviation for Gellman Brothers), a Minneapolis company from 1920-1969. Bought this one because it has a glass cutting blade.

The last three I bought from Jim (can never remember his last name) who curates the Wawarsing Knife Museum in Napanoch, NY. He always has a wonderful selection of hundreds of knives and is a real pleasure to chat with. Amusing story: along with the three I had a blue celluloid-handled one set aside at Jim's table while I walked around. His wife, who is a collector in her own right, came back to the table and spotted it and told Jim she had to have it for her collection... end of conversation. When I got back to the table I gave her a good natured bad time claiming "first dibs" but to no avail.

Great pick up's Dennis, that grafting knife is my pick of that litter.

Here is my score, rare KA-BAR hatchet with aluminum handle and black synthetic KA-BAR inserts. This model was also made with larger cocobolo inserts in the aluminum handle. What really drove me to this one (I have another) was the fact that it has the original sheath which I had never seen before. I didn't set up, just went to shop and hang out. Good seeing Dennis and Steve there among a bunch of other regular NCCA guys.

Nice hatchet Gene, hope the show had more turnout than September. I will try and get down to Mystic this year next month.

Show had only one or two empty tables and there was a CROWD of shoppers. A friend of mine set up for the first time there selling only modern knives and he did quite well. The empty tables had seller's names on them, so the tables were sold, I guess the two no-shows had paid their table fee but just couldn't make it. Mystic will be sold out soon I believe, and that show has 110 8' tables, best and biggest show we have in the northeast.

is that something as a buyer you have to buy tickets in advance for? Would be my first time going, would hate to drive down there and get turned away at the door. I have my NCCA membership... but would have a friend in tow more than likely.

PD - no need to get tickets in advance so no worries... to my knowledge it has never been so crowded that people were turned away due to fire regulations... Mystic is a very large venue and as Gene said best of year for us.. hope to meet you in person there ..

Don't worry Dan, you will be able to get in. It is our biggest show in the northeast but there still aren't all that many knife collectors as to make entry a problem. You don't have to be a member to get in, admittance is the same as the Marlboro shows. The conference room at the Groton Marriot where the show is held is quite large and there is plenty of space between rows so crowding isn't a problem.
