Getting others interested in knife collecting

You know the only thing better than getting something you want at times is to give it away to another and see the surprise and enjoyment on their face.

I had the pleasure of picking up a nice 3 bladed pearl trapper this week and enjoying the beauty of another nice knife for my collection. But before I had the chance to stick the little knife away in my collection drawer my 14 year old son walked in the room and was mesmorized by the knife. Without making a big scene about the knife I said if you like it that much it's yours enjoy

We then went out for dinner and for the next 2 hours he shared with his mother and I how his knife rocks and did we see the beauty in the pearl like he did and Dad how do I clean my knives...

I have shared with a lot of people my little collection of knives and I enjoy the looks on their faces and to hear them say they might get into knife collecting as well as they pick up and examine my knives.

My hope is to leave my collection to my son so he can enjoy them or sell them, his choice...But I am enjoying even more the fact that he is now wanting to start his own collection and the pleasure of sharing a hobby with him as a friend and a father...

i know what you mean. i dont have a son, but my daughter enjoys my knives as well. i do some buying, selling and trading and she has a few favorites that i dont dare mess with...lol. i know what you mean tho...it is an enjoyable hobby and even some of my friends who dont collect knives are taken back when i have shown them some of mine. its enjoyable watching someone (collector or not) appreciate a quality knife for its beauty.

I have 7 childern, 5 boys and 2 grils, All of them at one point or time sit with me and go through OUR knives,I even make it a point to buy any old cheaper knives at all knive shows or on ebay just so we can clean and work on them together,we have made many an old knife that didnt have much hope of ever being in a collection,look like a gem,My youngest child 4 year old gril loves to be with me while she carefully looks at our knives.I`m sure knife collecting has brought me and my childern together(very close)thanks for the chance to talk about my kids and knives.

My three year old daughter definitely is aware of my pocketknives, and probably assumes that all dads have hundreds of knives laying around, and two or three on their person at any given moment. In any case, she's adopted a 1987 Case 62042 pattern pen knife. Of course to her it just looks like a miniature pocket knife, obviously made for a three year old. She opens my EDC drawer and if she can't find it she says "Where's my pocket knife?" and I get it for her. She can't open it of course but she'll carry it around and even slip it into her pocket if she has one. Pretty hilarious, as well as damn cute.

I agree with you guys. I am very happy that my boys like my knives. My six year old. Wants to keep every one that comes along (he is a very devoted collector... Bugs, rocks and pocket knives too) And my 20 month old absolutely loves to be handed a knife to inspect. He will always gives a "WOW" usually followed by " big knipe" or his usual reply is "mine pocket knipe". I think I am safe in saying that the Jones boys will be collectors. And that makes ol' dad very happy.

I don't really have too much to add, except to express a genuine
admiration for the "sharing" of a somewhat unique hobby we're all
engaged in withour/your children. In light of what we're all reading each day in the headlines of our local papers, watching on CNN, etc., regarding the alienation of kids from their parents...it's just so cool to hear about you guys having the honor to be able to share your interests with your kids!
(My girls have ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST in my knife collection...BUT, I try and make up for that by playing tennis with them every chance I
get...taking them bike riding with me almost every day...jogging with me
when time & weather permits, etc.) They're just not into knives at all
right now...! Maybe the future will bring new interests? I really think mine are a little "afraid" of the knives right now. Maybe when they're a little older??
