I participated in two online auctions (which were also live auctions) from well-known auction houses (including one you would instantly recognize) and 'won' my item in both of them. The economic results of this experiment were not pretty. Most of the non-ebay auctions make ebay almost look like a freebie, in regards to fees, shipping, house premiums, seller's premiums, and on and on. In addition, One huge auction of nothing but rare fixed blades saw me paying an extremely suspicious amount, which had been my so-called invisible 'maximum," to the penny, a non-round amount. Not on just one knife, but on two. It was definitely a fixed deal, where my private bids were shared with a house shill in such a way that I would spend the whole sum, with no other bidders actually 'really' bidding on it. The other "bids" were mysteriously not available. Reminded me of local government shenanigans when it comes to letting contracts. Your mileage may vary (I sincerely hope!).
