cleaning old knifes

can any1 give me some advice about cleaning old knifes!they are slightly rusted but most of the old grime has came off with a splash off releasing oil!
some1 told me cleaning the blade and knife with peterol or parraffin?any advice any1?and what is the best way of sharpening the blade?
