Rehandle those busted up old knives
These are a couple of projects I did to save some otherwise ugly or unusable knives. The first was made from two idenitcal old 4 line Camillus parts knives. Shown is one in decent shape along with the restored version without bail. It has stabilized cherry burl scales. The second started life as a yellow composition large Case jacknife. It was in my collection a long time until one day I noticed the scales turning geen around the pins and sheild and the material literally melting. It was totally exposed to the air, so this took me by surprise. Darn celluloid! I rehandled this one in mule deer stag. It was my first attempt at a sheild (which I stole off an old camillus or schrade) and could have been better, but at least it wasn't melting! The third was a little used Western folding hunter that I bought cheap at a second hand store many years ago. It was cheap because the sheild side of the handle was missing! I had an old cows horn laying around, so I cut it up, boiled it , and squeezed it in a vise overnight. Then I sanded it flat and installed on the knife. All these knives were disassembled to rehandle. I guess there is an easier way, but I am unfamiliar with it. Anyway, now I have three knives that I didn't have before. GJ
