Mastodon Scales for a Queen Mtn.Man

Well, I'm certainly no expert, but I've rehandled a couple of knives so I thought I'd try my luck with one of those "unhandled" Queen lockbacks from Cumberland. The knife came assembled so first I took the rocker pin and lanyard tube out of it so I could remove the lock. I didn't want to remove the pivot so I had to silver solder the 4 scale pins onto the liners. Then I just relieved the back of the scales to accept the solder. This wasn't too tough, just go easy with the solder. Backing up just a bit; I had rough cut the scales and fit them to the bolsters so I was able to drill through the liners to get my holes right. Then it was just sanding and fitting and sanding and fitting.....'til I got them to fit right. Peened on the scales , then fit the rocker pin and lanyard loop and PRESTO, new EDC for GJ! Actually, it took me a couple o' weeks in my spare time. Whaddya think, guys?

GUNSTOCK JACK.. - great job mate! I just have to get myself into bone and stag....still enjoying the smell of wood dust for now though.

I've repaired scale pins by making a dome on one end, then just inserting it through the interior of the knife through the scale and peening the outside end of the pin....I used my steady to support the inside of the pin.

well fellas the main ingredient is a steady, but it can be done without one as well. When I'm well enough to get out to the shop I'll try and do a mini tutorial

Mammoth is similar to bone and stag in regards to toughness and ability to work it. It's just pricey...

Great seeing the step by step, always wondered how the pins were soldered on there. Makes sense in a minute when you see it like this. Good one Gunstock Jack. Fabulous looking knife too by the way.
