Opinions....repair or toss

I have recently acquired several pocket knives of various mfg's and condition. I have no idea where to start (or just hide them away). Just would like to find out which are worth repairing, restoration, or try to sell as is.
Please, no sarcasism, just revelent opinions on where to start. Thanks for your time!

There are different ways to look at it.

Financially. Will the final product be worth more than I put into it?

Hobby wise. I don’t mind the cost. I just want to do it for fun.

Sentimental. It means so much to me I’ll fix it no matter what the cost.

I bet everyone has a few knives they are looking to move. Someday I’ll find a scout master and give them to him.

Depends on what they are, really. Photos would help. I've got a Camillus TL-29 that is in good shape, except the backspring for the screwdriver is broken. I'm having it rebuilt, as I have plenty of standard Camilllus Electricians laying around I can use for parts. I might even try doing it myself.

Ken, did I interrupt your post correctly? Did you just volunteer to handle the Annual POS Roundtable this year. If so, that would be music to my ears. I'm kind of tuckered out and would love to see someone else step up and take the reins for the 2019 event.

I purchased a 155 piece collection last year of mostly old, very old knives. There was only one in there that I decided to restore. It is going to cost way more than I will ever get out of the knife, but I thought this one was unique enough to save. If I had the talent, I would have restored some myself. After I looked into all the equipment I would have to purchase and because of my severe arthritis in my back, I decided it was too expensive to dabble. So off the knife went to Muskrat Man along w/ two donor knives for parts and I will see if it was worth restoring or not. Restoring knives is not an inexpensive option if you can’t do the work yourself. If you are looking to learn how, there is a ton of information on this site on how to do that. If you have a unique knife that is worth the money to restore than by all means do it. If the knives are not unique, then don’t do it.
Plus I had some very good luck selling knives for parts, in some cases I got more for some broken parts knives than I got for functioning knives, go figure.

Good counsel SSK. That sounds like the route for me. As for parting them out, I guess just take a photo, list it, and see what happens. I just gotta find the right forum for that..thanks.

Not sure how many knives you're talking about. If you can post photos of maybe 5 per picture... maybe someone can tell you if it looks like you have anything of value and what direction to go. For the most part, the advice above is very good and the average old knife, that people have, isn't worth a lot.

Always a good idea to see what they are prior to listing them. There may be something that is valuable as-is, so you may not want to do anything to it and price it accordingly. Of course, if you list on ebay, the price usually works itself out with interested buyers.

I think you'll find that if you share pictures here of what they are, a couple things may happen:
1. You may get private offers to buy them depending on what they are.
2. People will help you out with what they are and any potential "winners". We are a helpful bunch here.

Yes, this is one of those "you never know until you look" experiences. Some knives, even as beaters can be worth very decent money. Lets see what we are talking about.

Since you're fairly new here, up at the very top in the grey header are several links, one of which is "Forums". Recommend you click on each of those links and have a look around to get familiar with the resources and topics here. Sorta like a quick tour of the place so you can see stuff where you'd like to come back and spend some time.

If you list them on eBay then here is a helpful hint. Start the title w/ the word “knife” and include in the title the words “parts” and or “repair”.
I found out the hard way that eBay’s search function doesn’t direct enquirers to your listing if you don’t have the right words in the title. And when I started putting “parts and repair” in the title it drew the attention of buyers looking for parts knives. Otherwise they just didn’t find my listings, they didn’t come up when a buyer wanted a knife for parts or repair.
Just some tricks of the trade.
