Schrade Walden 294 Peachseed Restoration

Post by orvet »

This was a fairly easy restoration. A year or so ago I found a Schrade Walden 294 with reasonably good blades and a broken handle.

Earlier this month at the OKCA many show I picked up an 294 frame with peachseed bone and a four line Camillus blade in the frame. I use the handles of the knife and put them on the old knife. Of course I took it apart and cleaned and polished the inside and as well as cleaning it up outside. I didn't believe in a high polish is that would've looked out of character given the use this knife is obviously seen.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

That one turned out really nice. I too do not believe in a lot of polishing on old knives being restored.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the encouragement. The most difficult part of this restoration was removing the pins without causing stress on the bone handles. Because you never know what hidden fractures there may be in old bone handles I didn't use the razor blade method of cutting the pins, but instead drilled each pin in the center until I was able to tap it out with a 1/16 inch pin punch.
At that point it's a simple matter to clean the inside of the knife and get ready to reassemble it.
Reassembling is also critical, again being careful not to cause stress on the handles. I used a pin spinner to install the rocker pin as it was the way the knife was assembled originally and peening a pin in such old bone would probably have resulted in a crack.
